About The Position

This position will be filled as an Apprentice 1st Year - 3rd Year depending on experience. The apprentice will be training to perform tasks involved in the construction and maintenance of electric transmission and distribution conductors, structures, underground systems, and related equipment. Responsibilities will progress in complexity and voltage exposure as the apprentice advances through the years. The role requires a strong emphasis on safety, learning company procedures, and customer service.

Must have worked for at least one year, and qualified, as an Apprentice 1st Year – Line Department or have had equivalent experience in related work, having all the qualifications of the previous classifications (for Apprentice 2nd Year).
Must have worked for at least one year, and qualified, as a Apprentice 2nd Year, or have had equivalent experience in related work, having all qualifications of the previous classifications (for Apprentice 3rd Year).
Know Company’s safety rules, and be willing and able to administer all approved methods of resuscitation, and be willing and able to render practical first aid.
Know the location of, and be willing and able to operate, all of the firefighting equipment. Know what kind of equipment to use on electrical, oil, and other fires.
Know Company’s electrical and mechanical tagging rules.
Be willing and able to read and understand simple wiring diagrams and blueprints.
Know city streets, and roads in rural sections.
Have thorough knowledge of city and state traffic laws.
Have a thorough knowledge of Company regulations and state laws governing disconnects for nonpayment, repossession of merchandise, and diversion of current.
Have general knowledge of electric circuits and equipment.
Be familiar with Company's rules and regulations applying to service and meter installations, Underwriters' National Electrical Code and any state or local regulations governing electrical wiring as pertains to service and meter installations.
Be willing and able to read and understand wiring diagrams and blueprints job packet content.
Have general knowledge of layout and characteristics of the distribution system in the area assigned.
Be willing and able to perform routine operations of moderate complexity and variety.

Nice To Haves

Hold a current Class A CDL license or be willing and able to obtain one prior to progressing to Apprentice 2nd Year.
Have knowledge of line and substation material and use of line and substation construction tools and equipment.
Hold a current Class A CDL license.
Have elementary working knowledge of electrical fundamentals.

Responsibilities

Perform less difficult tasks and assist others in high and low voltage line work.
Use pole climbing equipment and handle self on pole in a safe and efficient manner.
Handle poles, install poles, and assist in the erection of steel, wood and other structures, including foundations.
Make up and install guys and install secondaries.
Connect services on energized conductors up to 600 volts.
Install secondary racks and clevis, anchors, miscellaneous hardware, grounds, fittings for vertical type construction, buss supports, and conductors on dead circuits.
Perform simple transmission and distribution switching (with qualified lineman assistance).
Tie knots and splice rope.
Assist in trimming trees.
Assist qualified lineman or mechanic in simple routine inspection and maintenance.
Assist in the installation of all types of conduit systems.
Assist in the handling, moving and installation of all transmission, distribution and plant equipment, machinery, etc.
Prepare reports and records.
Read and understand job drawings and maps and assist with Job Hazard Assessment.
Operate Company’s vehicles and equipment.
Assist in the installation and removal of electric meters, services and related equipment on customers' premises.
Connect and disconnect service at the pole.
Locate and repair all types of breaks in the electric transmission and distribution system.
Answer electric trouble calls to customers' premises.
Install crossarms, secondary racks and clevis, anchors and guys, and install hardware and fittings for vertical type construction, including conductors, single phase transformers, lightning arresters, grounds, cutouts, etc., on dead circuits.
Under close supervision may be allowed to cover and work energized circuits when they and their supervisor are confident that this can be done safely.
Assist in the installation, maintenance and repair of street lighting equipment and fixtures.
Direct work of helpers and apprentices as required.
Refuse transformers and circuit breakers and check grounds.
Inspect meters and meter loops for irregularities.
Check customer's wiring for accidental ground.
Check installation for proper secondary ground.
Replace fuses on customer's premises.
Execute non-payment disconnects.
Assist qualified serviceman, lineman, or others in working on energized conductors up to 5,000 over 600 volts.
Handle and work from ladders.
Assist in the installation and removal of temporary wiring for equipment.
Read meters, install and remove secondary meters and services.
Make secondary load and voltage checks, setting of recording meters and change charts.
Use hot line tools under close supervision of qualified workman.
Fuse transformers and sectionalizing fuses.
String, sag and tie in conductors on dead lines of all classes.
Install all types of transformer installations, make tap changes and install primary metering equipment under supervision of qualified workman.
Assist in making aerial and submarine cable installations, including the making of joints and installing potheads.
Assist in the installation of pole type regulators and transformers to boost or buck line voltage.
Assist in phasing and checking rotation in circuits direct and with potential transformers.
Assist in erecting and maintaining steel towers and outdoor substations.
Assist in receiving blocks.
Work energized conductors on simple structures, up to and including 5,000 volts over 600 volts.
Run services, install and remove all types of secondary meters and related equipment.
Replace fuse links in outdoor type cutouts, and transformers.
Assist in load and voltage checks on distribution transformers.
Assist in checking phase sequence and rotations.
Read and check all types of meters and change graphic charts.
Give service and meter locations.
Plan and lay out work in a safe and efficient manner.
