About The Position

Carter Machinery Company, the authorized Caterpillar dealer, is hiring Apprentice Technicians for their Heavy Equipment, Rental, and Power Systems operations in South Hill, Virginia. This program is designed for individuals with a strong mechanical aptitude, including high school graduates, veterans exiting the military, or technicians looking to transition from other mechanical fields (e.g., automotive, HVAC). The company offers an in-house, fully accredited 15-month Apprenticeship Program. This program provides comprehensive training to troubleshoot and diagnose diesel equipment problems, perform repairs, recondition, and service heavy equipment and components. Apprentices are paid, receive full-time benefits, and incur no education expenses. Upon successful completion, apprentices will receive accreditation from The Virginia Department of Labor, officially becoming certified Construction Equipment Technicians. The program is nationally recognized by the Federal Department of Labor and fully accredited through the Commonwealth of Virginia. Multiple shift opportunities, including 3-day/week and 4-day/week options, are available in many locations, paving the way to a Caterpillar technician career path.

Requirements

  • Self-starter able to work with limited supervision and meet deadlines
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and excellent troubleshooting skills
  • Proficient in the use of a computer, Microsoft Office products and service software required in position
  • Able to complete service reports and provide pertinent details for work orders
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Able to write service reports that accurately document diagnosis and repairs performed
  • Must prepare required documentation including work orders, parts lists, and time cards in an accurate and timely manner
  • Must be able to read and understand operating manuals
  • Must be self-directed, organized, able to interact with coworkers, and work as an integral part of a team
  • Must have excellent driving record
  • Must be able to work all shifts and overtime as needed to meet customer needs

Nice To Haves

  • Completion of a mechanical VoTech program or mechanical experience preferred (i.e. automotive, electrical, HVAC, etc.)

Responsibilities
