Each Apprentice Teacher is responsible for advancing Herron Preparatory Academy’s (HPA) mission and embodying our core values by ensuring all scholars access quality classical education that leads to systematic academic achievement and strong character development. The person in this role is assigned to be mentored by an HPA Classroom Teacher for the duration of the residency, typically 1-2 semesters. During that time, the Apprentice Teacher learns and replicates the classroom practices that make HPA an exceptional school, slowly taking on more responsibilities under the tutelage of the mentoring classroom teacher. The Apprentice Teacher will also support targeted small-group instruction and assessment efforts, working either directly with their mentoring teacher or the Academic Team, which oversees Tier 2 academic interventions. By the end of the residency, it is expected that the Apprentice Teacher is prepared to take on the role of a classroom teacher. These responsibilities are: builds relationships based in trust and respect with scholars, families, and HPA staff members; directly leads our scholars’ learning by setting clear, high standards for scholars’ academic and behavioral expectations; planning lessons that engage scholars’ curiosity and interest; evaluates effectiveness and adjusts instructional strategies based on scholars’ performance, and models the HPA Habits we strive to instill in all of our scholars. Taken together, our classroom teachers are integral to ensuring scholars rapidly progress toward, and ultimately attain, mastery of grade-level academic standards and exceed our behavioral expectations.
