About The Position

Under the general supervision of the Electric Administrator, this third-level apprentice lineman performs work in the construction, operation, maintenance, and repairs of power and lighting distribution systems. The role involves restoring power, maintaining lines, and associated equipment used in overhead and underground service and substations to provide reliable service. The incumbent exercises some independent decision-making and works under the general supervision of a certified lineman and the Crew Chief. This position is required to start and complete the third year of the Municipal Electric Systems of Oklahoma (MESO) Certified Line Apprentice Training Program. The role involves working on deadlines and equipment, live secondary lines and equipment without direct supervision, and on live primary lines and equipment with direct supervision. This is a safety-sensitive position subject to random drug testing, and compliance with federal regulations where marijuana remains illegal is mandatory. Possession of a medical marijuana license does not exempt safety-sensitive positions from federal regulations. Testing positive on a drug test for these positions will result in immediate termination due to the City of Claremore's zero-tolerance policy.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or GED equivalent.
  • Must be able to complete necessary requirements of a four-year apprenticeship or equivalent program.
  • Must possess a Certified Apprentice Lineman II Certificate recognized by the Department of Labor.
  • Must possess a Valid Oklahoma State Driver's License.
  • Must have a valid State Class “A” CDL with air brake and standard transmission endorsement or the ability to obtain within 30 days from the date of hire.
  • Must be insurable with City’s insurance carrier.
  • CPR and First Aid certification or the ability to obtain one within 60 days from the date of hire.
  • Knowledge of methods, materials, and tools used in electrical distribution system maintenance work.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
  • Knowledge of the principles of electrical theory as applied to electrical circuits and wiring systems and ability to apply this knowledge to work situations.
  • Knowledge of proper methods, procedures, and safety precautions of line work.
  • Ability to understand and follow complex oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to work under varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to learn proper methods, procedures, and safety precautions of line work.
  • Ability to learn to climb poles with a climber’s belt and hooks and perform strenuous duties in all kinds of conditions and weather.
  • Ability to understand and provide oral and written instructions quickly and accurately, and under adverse conditions.
  • Must be able to learn to make some mathematical computations accurately.
  • Skill in operation of the listed tools and equipment.
  • Knowledge of the application of first aid methods including artificial respiration.
  • Must not have a fear of heights.
  • Must be mentally and physically prepared for unforeseen emergencies at all times.
  • Good physical condition and sufficient strength and agility to climb poles.
  • Must pass a physical examination at a facility designated by the City of Claremore.
  • Must be able to wear the appropriate protective clothing/gear to complete assigned tasks in accordance with safety requirements.
  • Must be willing to remove all jewelry, including wedding ring, while in the performance of job duties, as required by department safety guidelines.
  • Must be able to communicate and receive verbal instructions at distances of up to 75 feet due to power signals and communications from those on the pole or at the source of work and those on the ground near shut off.

Responsibilities

  • Complete and pass the third year of the MESO apprenticeship program within 15 months from the start date of the program.
  • Assist with installation, operation, maintenance, and repair of overhead and underground electrical power lines, systems, and associated/related equipment.
  • Assist in the construction, operation, maintenance, and repair of transmission and substation facilities.
  • Assist with service calls concerning power outages and electrical problems.
  • Operate motorized equipment, use hand tools, and perform routine maintenance on electrical equipment, machinery, and tools.
  • Use climber’s belt and tools and climb poles.
  • Follow safety guidelines as set forth in OSHA and NESC requirements.
  • Work on deadlines and equipment, live secondary lines and equipment without direct supervision, and on primary lines and equipment with direct supervision.
  • Periodically perform stand-by and call-back duties and be available for call outs during off-duty hours, including holidays and weekends.
  • Live within twenty-five (25) miles of the Electric warehouse.
  • Stock and service vehicles to be equipped to respond to emergency situations.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.
  • Maintain tools, equipment, and materials and guard against loss or damage.
  • Transfer knowledge to coworkers in the apprenticeship program.
  • Provide frequent supervision for apprentices, including assisting them with completion of their on-the-job training and work on live and deadline equipment.
