Requirements

  • High School diploma.
  • Commercial Driver License Class A with “N” (Tanker) endorsement.
  • Must successfully complete each apprentice step and associated training.
  • Must have the ability and skills to pass an Operations Test Battery (OTB) and successfully complete each lineman/apprenticeship step.
  • Must successfully participate in the four and one-half year apprenticeship program.
  • Must have the ability to become proficient in TEC’s current work management software system and operate a mobile laptop.

Nice To Haves

  • College or technical-related education.
  • Experience with constructing and maintaining transmission, distribution and URD systems.

Responsibilities

  • Performs all aspects of constructing and maintaining Tampa Electric’s overhead and underground transmission and distribution system including switching and troubleshooting and operation of equipment and vehicles.
  • Work on energized systems and response to emergency overtime is required.
  • Must perform all duties following the safe work practices manual, general rules and specifications, and procedures set forth in the Company Policies.
  • The Apprentice Lineman accomplishes other duties as directed by the Crew Leader.
  • The scope of this position shall include those responsibilities defined in Exhibit “A” of the IBEW Collective Bargaining Agreement and/or the IBEW Intent Book where the position is at a lesser rate of pay.
  • Possess a knowledge and understanding of the Safe Work Practices Manual.
  • Construct and maintain overhead and/or underground residential, commercial and industrial electrical distribution systems, transmission systems and lighting systems.
  • Install, remove or repair the following equipment on energized or de-energized lines (distribution or transmission) in all types of weather conditions: Anchors, cross-arms, insulators, brackets, capacitors, regulators, OCR’s, poles, switches, lightning arrestors, grounds, transformers (overhead and underground, single phase, open-Y and three phase banks), conductors (overhead and underground primary, secondary and services) secondary hand-holes, URD switch-gear, LBC cabinets, manholes, splice boxes and fuses, set and remove meters and take readings.
  • Utilize voltmeters, phase rotation meters, phasing tools, meggars, cable fault locating equipment.
  • Handle large equipment such as chain hoist and sag large transmission/distribution conductors, any size as required and other related equipment as needed.
  • Switch, tag, test and ground overhead and underground electrical systems as well as perform some substation switching.
  • Climb poles and structures using appropriate safety equipment.
  • Drive and operate tractor-trailer carrying up to 80’ poles, large aerial buckets with long overhang on booms, cranes, digger derrick and forklift.
  • Operate rear easement machines, wire pulling and tensioning machines.
  • Respond to emergency and scheduled overtime and may assist in mutual assistance efforts for disaster restorations.
  • Complete necessary paperwork, interpret work requests and construction information, and enter time.
  • Attend and receive required annual training and/or certifications and assist in the training of new employees as required.
  • Responding to storms will be considered a condition of employment.
  • Team members are required to participate in the response/recovery activities related to emergencies/disasters to maintain service to our TECO Energy customers.
  • Team members are required to work in their normal job duties or other assigned activities.
