About The Position

McKay Métis Contracting is seeking an Apprentice, HET. Reporting to the Supervisor/designate, the Apprentice, Heavy Equipment Technician is accountable for assisting in diagnosing, servicing, and repairing heavy equipment and trucks, including mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems, under the supervision of a Journeyperson. This role supports troubleshooting activities, performs routine maintenance, and assists with repairs to ensure equipment reliability and safe operation. The apprentice will gain hands-on experience in various repair and maintenance tasks, including overhauls and component rebuilds, and will learn to operate diagnostic equipment. Accurate record-keeping and adherence to safety procedures are essential.

Requirements

  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Registered Apprentice in the Heavy Equipment
  • Certificate of completion for school
  • Mechanical Aptitude and eagerness to learn

Responsibilities

  • Assist in diagnosing, servicing, and repairing heavy equipment and trucks, including mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems, under the supervision of a Journeyperson.
  • Support troubleshooting activities and assist in performing required repairs to ensure equipment reliability and safe operation.
  • Perform routine maintenance tasks such as checking and refilling fluid levels, inspecting hoses, belts, brakes, and tires, changing filters and oil, and lubricating components.
  • Assist with the repair and maintenance of track drive systems, tandem axles, suspensions, transmissions, and other heavy-duty mechanical components.
  • Participate in overhauls and component rebuilds while gaining hands-on experience in engine and system repairs.
  • Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, service logs, and work orders as directed.
  • Support the preparation of material and cost estimates for maintenance and repair projects.
  • Assist in testing and inspecting equipment to ensure proper performance and compliance with specifications.
  • Learn to operate diagnostic and computerized test equipment to identify mechanical and electronic faults.
  • Support the assembly and alignment of mechanical and gear systems.
  • Participate in scheduled maintenance programs and assist in tracking equipment service intervals.
  • Follow all safety procedures, company policies, and standard operating practices.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the Journeyperson or designate.
