About The Position

This is a full-time position for an Apprentice Heavy Duty Mechanic. The role involves working a 40-hour work week according to a schedule. The hourly rate is $39.27 per hour, starting at Pay Grade 9 - Schedule “B” Outside Employees. There is a pay progression plan where the position starts two pay grades below the journeyman rate and progresses by one pay grade each year of the apprenticeship until the full rate is achieved.

Requirements

  • Grade 12 Diploma or GED
  • Registered apprentice in Heavy Duty Equipment Technician or eligible to register as an apprentice in British Columbia
  • Valid Class three (3) BC Driver’s License with Air Endorsement
  • Completion of second year apprenticeship program in either Automotive Mechanics, Heavy Duty Mechanic, Commercial Transport Mechanic, or Metal Fabricator (Fitter)
  • Knowledge of hydraulic, electric, and brake (air/hydraulic) systems
  • Demonstrated ability with computerized maintenance, diagnostics, and repair
  • Ability to understand electrical and hydraulic schematics and manuals
  • Knowledge of municipal, provincial and federal standards and regulations
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise considerable tact, courtesy and diplomacy in dealing with members of the public, other agencies and staff
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • High degree of initiative and sound judgment
  • Demonstrated ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Demonstrated ability to perform all of the duties outlined in a safe manner following established City policies and procedures and WorkSafeBC requirements
  • A complete set of mechanic hand tools must be supplied by the incumbent
  • A satisfactory Police Information Check required

Responsibilities

  • Perform maintenance, diagnostics, and repair on heavy duty equipment.
  • Work with hydraulic, electric, and brake systems.
  • Understand and utilize electrical and hydraulic schematics and manuals.
  • Adhere to municipal, provincial, and federal standards and regulations.
  • Exercise tact, courtesy, and diplomacy when interacting with the public, other agencies, and staff.
  • Manage time and organizational tasks effectively.
  • Work with minimal supervision.
  • Perform all duties in a safe manner, following established City policies, procedures, and WorkSafeBC requirements.
  • Be available to work various schedules, including weekends, holidays, and day, evening, and night shifts as outlined in the Collective Agreement.
  • Respond to emergency callouts and undertake responsibilities specific to Disaster Services.
