About The Position

The Strait Regional Centre for Education (SRCE) is seeking an Apprentice Carpenter for a term position at the Mulgrave Operations Centre. This role is part of the public education system in Nova Scotia, focused on supporting student learning, achievement, well-being, and overall success. The SRCE serves approximately 5,948 students across 20 schools and 375 pre-primary children in 14 locations, covering the counties of Antigonish, Guysborough, Inverness, and Richmond. This position falls under the CUPE Local 955 job classification.

Requirements

  • Successful high school completion or the equivalent in post secondary education and experience.
  • Minimum 3rd year apprentice.
  • 3 years experience carpentry experience.
  • Valid Driver's License.
  • Excellent knowledge of Occupational Health & Safety Procedures and Regulations.
  • Physical and mechanical aptitude to perform a range of maintenance manual tasks.
  • Demonstrated oral and written communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability and dexterity in the use of various manual power tools.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Effective interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work with minimum supervision.
  • Current certification for WHMIS and First Aid.

Nice To Haves

  • Current certification in range of Construction Safety Courses such as Fall Arrest, Scaffolding, Personal Life Devices, Confined Spaces, Lock out-Tag Out.
  • Playground inspection certificate.

Responsibilities

  • Builds, repairs, and installs structures including but not limited to partitions, structural components, doors & windows, roofing, flooring, walls & ceilings, cabinetry and other items normal to the carpentry trade in accordance with established practices and standards.
  • Assists in the planning and co-ordination of building or capital improvement projects. Determines material quantities and potential work time for proposed upgrades, installations, repairs and projects to ensure accurate estimating of costs and schedules.
  • Performs semi-skilled work and labour associated with other trades as required.
  • Ensures all work is done according to standard practices, design specifications, national, provincial and local building codes, other applicable standards and good practice of the trade.
  • Provides emergency response and corrective action for urgent building issues.
  • Maintains appropriate records including recording equipment repair history, work orders, daily job card, vehicle records, test reports, and other related data.
  • Ensures sufficient material, correct replacement parts and suppliers. Initiates ordering of supplies and replacement parts, including properly stocking vehicle and regularly recording of vehicle inventory.
  • Liaises with consultants, contractors, inspectors, suppliers, and other departments on maintenance and project work.
  • Completes and documents work orders including time and materials and submits to operations department.
  • Provides written reports on any inspections and/or tests and makes recommendations to improve performance.
  • Ensures duties are performed in a fiscally responsible manner while observing all safety practices and regulations.
  • Evaluates status of buildings and facilities as assigned and provides written reports.
  • Trains, and evaluates apprentices and other assigned staff; reviews progress and makes changes as needed.
  • Perform duties in compliance with school, Operations Department, and SRCE policies and procedures including Occupational Health, safety, attendance, work routines, WHMIS and evacuation plans and the laws of the Province of Nova Scotia.
  • Other related duties as assigned.
