About The Position

McKay Métis Contracting is seeking an Apprentice, Automotive Technician. Reporting to the Supervisor/designate, the Apprentice, Automotive Technician is accountable for assisting in performing maintenance and repair activities on a variety of automotive equipment, heavy-duty trucks, and semi-tractors under the supervision of a Journeyperson or Lead Technician or designate. This role involves supporting the diagnosis, servicing, and repair of mechanical, electrical, and electronic control systems, troubleshooting malfunctions, and conducting routine maintenance checks. The apprentice will also participate in engine overhauls, maintain service logs, support work order preparation, and learn to use diagnostic tools.

Requirements

  • Registered Apprentice in Automotive Technician
  • Certificate of completion for school
  • Mechanical Aptitude and eagerness to learn

Responsibilities

  • Assist in performing maintenance and repair activities on a variety of automotive equipment, heavy-duty trucks, and semi-tractors under the supervision of a Journeyperson or Lead Technician or designate.
  • Support in diagnosing, servicing, and repairing mechanical, electrical, and electronic control systems found in vehicles and equipment, including both manual and automatic transmissions.
  • Assist in troubleshooting malfunctions and performing repairs as directed.
  • Conduct routine maintenance checks such as inspecting and adjusting fluid levels, hoses, belts, brakes, tires, and clutches; changing filters and oil; and lubricating vehicles and motorized equipment.
  • Participate in engine overhauls, replacements, and component rebuilds while developing hands-on mechanical skills.
  • Maintain accurate service logs and assist in recordkeeping of maintenance and repair work.
  • Support the preparation of work orders and material cost estimates under direction.
  • Assist in testing and inspecting mechanical systems after repair or assembly to ensure proper performance and compliance with manufacturer specifications.
  • Learn to use diagnostic tools and computerized test equipment to identify and verify faults or malfunctions.
  • Assist in basic fabrication and assembly work as required.
  • Help maintain parts inventory by researching, organizing, and replenishing commonly used items.
  • Perform pre-operational checks, complete safety walkarounds, and ensure vehicles and equipment are clean, safe, and ready for operation.
  • Report any damage, defects, or near-miss incidents immediately to the supervisor or maintenance lead.
  • Operate equipment safely and according to established standards, procedures, and site-specific practices.
  • Maintain tools, equipment, and the work area in a clean, organized, and safe condition.
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors and team members to ensure work goals and schedules are met.
  • Support on-the-job training activities for other apprentices or new employees when requested.
  • Participate in shift handovers by ensuring accurate logs and records of equipment condition and location are completed.
  • Foster a cooperative and safety-focused work environment.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
