About The Position

Join Microsoft’s Turing team to develop applied research and engineering solutions that bring state-of-the-art deep learning models and large language models into production at enterprise scale. The team builds core systems behind Microsoft 365 Copilot and other conversational search experiences used across Microsoft’s ecosystem. Work may include advanced AI capabilities such as container execution and image generation, Copilot orchestration and runtime systems, multimodal and agentic interactions, and AI-driven computer and tool use. Applied scientists work closely with software engineers to turn cutting-edge research into production-ready systems. Project assignments are shaped by employees’ interests, experience, and strengths. This role is based in Redmond, Washington, and requires working in the office at least three days per week. Domestic relocation assistance is available.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or a related field and at least 2 years of related experience, or a master’s degree in one of those fields and at least 1 year of related experience, or a doctorate in one of those fields, or equivalent experience.
  • Must be able to meet Microsoft, customer, and/or government security screening requirements, including passing the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire or transfer and every two years thereafter.

Nice To Haves

  • At least 2 years of industrial coding experience in C++, C#, C, Java, or Python.
  • At least 2 years of experience applying deep-learning techniques and driving end-to-end AI product development in areas such as search, recommendation, NLP, or document understanding.
  • At least 2 years of experience with common machine-learning and deep-learning frameworks such as PyTorch or TensorFlow.
  • Ability to communicate technical details clearly across organizational boundaries.
  • Effectiveness working end-to-end in challenging technical domains, including planning, design, execution, continuous release, and service operation.
  • Experience shipping internet-scale, low-latency, high-throughput AI products.
  • Self-driven, results-oriented, high-integrity, collaborative approach, with the ability to solve problems with groups and find win-win solutions.
  • Customer-, end-result-, and metrics-driven approach to design and development.
  • Motivation and ability to learn, enter new domains, and manage ambiguity.
  • Strong publication record at top conferences such as ACL, EMNLP, SIGKDD, AAAI, WSDM, COLING, WWW, NeurIPS, or ICASSP.

Responsibilities

  • Work with applied scientists and engineers to design and build backend platform capabilities and core Copilot scenarios.
  • Drive projects from design through implementation and experimentation to shipment to users.
  • Own the development of state-of-the-art machine-learning and deep-learning algorithms and techniques using text, images, and video to analyze and transform content.
  • Design and develop fundamental technologies and drive applied research powering next-generation AI experiences.
  • Collaborate in a geographically distributed team and contribute to the design, functionality, security, performance, scalability, manageability, and supportability of Microsoft products using deep-learning technology.

Benefits

  • Domestic relocation assistance is available.
  • Certain roles may be eligible for benefits and other compensation; additional information is available through Microsoft’s careers pay and benefits page.
