About The Position

Thomson Reuters Labs in Toronto is seeking an ML/NLP scientist intern with a passion for problem-solving using state-of-the-art Machine Learning and Natural Language Processing techniques. Thomson Reuters Labs experiments, builds, and delivers by supporting the organization and its customers through applied research and development of new products and technologies. The Labs innovate collaboratively across core segments in Legal, Tax & Accounting, Government, and Reuters News, undertaking a diverse portfolio of projects and investing in long-term research for the future. As an intern, you will be part of a diverse, interdisciplinary global team of experts, including specialists in Information Retrieval, Natural Language Processing, Machine Learning, Engineering, and Design, driving the company’s digital and AI transformation. This team contributes to major products serving research and workflow to tax and accounting professionals, the fastest growing segment of the company. The role involves delivering automation to tax and accounting customers through transformative enhancements to these products, focusing on the cutting edge of AI.

Requirements

  • PhD student/recent graduate, or MSc recent graduate in a discipline relevant to NLP/IR/ML/Statistics.
  • Practical and relevant experience building NLP/IR/ML systems, from ideation to implementation.
  • Software engineering skills for prototyping.
  • Proficiency in implementing solutions using Python, DL and agentic frameworks, and relevant tools.
  • Experience in using code collaboration and versioning systems such as Github.
  • Familiarity with cloud tools such as Amazon AWS, MS Azure, or Google Cloud.
  • Data-driven problem-solving and decision-making mindset.
  • Curious and innovative disposition capable of proposing outside-the-box solutions.
  • Comfortable in communicating (verbal and written) complex AI solutions to audiences with diverse technical backgrounds.

Nice To Haves

  • Ability to translate academic research into working prototypes and experience experimenting with novel NLP/IR/ML models to solve real-world problems.
  • Familiarity with generative AI, large language models (LLMs), and agentic, observability and LLM tracing frameworks.
  • Self-driven attitude and ability to work with limited supervision.
  • Team player and comfortable to collaborate with internal team members and external stakeholders.
  • Comfortable in working in fast-paced, agile environments managing uncertainty and ambiguity.
  • Publications at relevant venues such as ACL, EMNLP, NAACL, NeurIPS, ICLR, SIGIR, KDD, or similar venues are a bonus.
