About The Position

Luminai is hiring an Applied AI Engineer to play a foundational role in researching, experimenting with, and rapidly improving AI systems for a capable and reliable AI automation platform. The platform enables organizations worldwide to deploy and scale executable AI automations in mission-critical production environments. The role combines hands-on AI and software engineering with technical leadership, including setting technical direction and raising engineering standards across the team.

The team works in-office four days per week, Monday through Friday, with Wednesday optional work from home, in either San Francisco, California, or New York, New York.

Requirements

• At least 5 years of experience shipping high-quality code in challenging projects.
• A track record of serving as a senior, steady team member, working with less oversight and setting a high bar for others.
• Bachelor's or master's degree in Computer Science, Machine Learning, or a related field.
• Solid fundamentals in algorithms, data structures, and system design.
• Attention to detail and first-principles thinking about real-world deployment of intelligent systems.
• Experience shipping machine learning models to production.

Nice To Haves

• Previous experience working with distributed computing systems in production.

Responsibilities

• Design experiments and test ideas to optimize key internal AI benchmarks.
• Design and improve evaluation frameworks to accelerate experimentation.
• Train, fine-tune, and optimize machine learning models; rigorously evaluate and test them for accuracy, generalization, and performance.
• Collaborate on core product development to deliver higher platform capabilities.
• Set up observability and monitoring systems to safety-check model behavior in critical settings.
• Set technical direction across experimentation and evaluation work, raising standards for rigor, tooling, and team best practices.
• Mentor and unblock other engineers, providing senior guidance on ambiguous technical tradeoffs.
