Applied AI Engineer

General Matter•Los Angeles, CA
•$100,000 - $200,000•Onsite

About The Position

General Matter is hiring an Applied AI Engineer to help accelerate critical-path engineering work across areas such as nuclear licensing, integrated safety analysis, design criteria, and technoeconomic modeling. The Applied AI team works directly with engineering teams to identify workflow bottlenecks, build tools that make existing workflows significantly faster, and then move on to the next problem. The role offers the opportunity to shape AI-first engineering at a nuclear company and challenge established assumptions about how analyses, documents, and reviews are performed. Example projects include building AI tools that enable engineers to run complex safety and physics analyses before design reviews; automating legacy simulation workflows so engineers can run neutronics using configuration files rather than learning older codes; and integrating with internal ticketing, design-tree, and file-management tools to create agents for automated triage, routing, and prioritization. The company is open to multiple levels for this role. The position is 100% onsite and in person, with daily office attendance required. The role may require extended hours and weekends as necessary. Applicants must currently be US citizens and be capable of obtaining and maintaining a US Q clearance.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science or higher in engineering, physics, chemistry, applied math, or a related technical field.
  • Proficiency in Python and software engineering fundamentals.
  • Experience building tools or workflows using LLMs, AI agents, or modern AI techniques.
  • Ability to work extended hours and weekends as necessary.
  • Ability to work in the office every day; the role is 100% onsite and in person.
  • Currently a US citizen with the capability to obtain and maintain a US Q clearance.

Nice To Haves

  • Background in a hard STEM field such as physics, chemistry, mechanical, electrical, nuclear, or mathematics.
  • Ability to follow technical conversations with domain experts and identify workflow tasks that can be automated.
  • Ability to write clean, production-grade Python.
  • Versatile engineering fundamentals and ability to become fluent quickly in fields such as neutronics, integrated safety, data, and manufacturing.
  • Genuine enthusiasm for using AI to solve problems, including RAG and tool-use architectures.
  • Proactive approach to identifying bottlenecks, proposing solutions, and demonstrating prototypes without waiting for a specification, roadmap, or permission.

Responsibilities

  • Identify bottlenecks in engineering workflows and build tools to accelerate those workflows.
  • Build AI tooling that enables engineers to run complex safety and physics analyses before design reviews without waiting for a specialist.
  • Automate legacy simulation workflows so engineers can run neutronics using a configuration file.
  • Integrate with internal ticketing, design-tree, and file-management tools.
  • Build agents to automate triage, routing, and prioritization.

Benefits

  • Long-term incentives in the form of stock options may be available to full-time hires.
  • Access to medical, vision, and dental coverage.
  • Access to a 401(k) retirement plan.
