Applied AI Engineer, Finance

Tutor Intelligence•Watertown, MA
•$130,000 - $250,000

About The Position

Tutor Intelligence is hiring its first Applied AI Engineer dedicated to Finance. This technical role will build and steward the software systems that support finance operations, including planning and forecasting, billing, the close, and reporting used by leadership and the board. The engineer will design new process flows and workflows, build tools and AI agents from scratch, and own outcomes as an embedded member of the finance team. The role is part of Tutor’s forward-deployed AI engineering team and will work across the company’s finance operations, robot deployments, customers, and data. Because Tutor sells robot labor using usage-based pricing, billing, revenue, and unit economics must reflect actual robot activity. The engineer will take over and extend existing finance tools, improve them as the business scales, and build controls, checks, and audit trails that support reliable financial reporting. Tutor Intelligence is a robotics research and deployment company founded at MIT and headquartered in Watertown, Massachusetts. It designs and manufactures robot hardware, trains AI models, works with end customers, and maintains its robot fleet across the United States.

Requirements

  • Have architected and shipped a real system end to end, such as a product, internal tooling, data system, or infrastructure, and be able to explain its design choices.
  • Write working software using technologies such as Python, SQL, APIs, and data pipelines; build with LLMs and AI coding tools regularly.
  • Have a technical background and a complementary strength in an area such as finance, economics, operations, strategy, or founding a company.
  • Demonstrate interest in, passion for, or experience with finance and a fundamental understanding of how a company's finances work; prior employment in a finance title is not required.
  • Be precise, build checks, attend to edge cases, and be able to explain financial figures.
  • Learn quickly, take on ambiguous problems with little direction, and seek ownership and impact.
  • Want to be embedded in a business function; this is not a product engineering or research role.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with usage-based or subscription billing systems.
  • Experience with a modern accounting and spend stack and BI tools.
  • Technical program management experience, especially in FinOps or fintech; product management experience; or experience as a founder or in a first-of-function role.
  • Experience with hardware unit economics, equipment financing, or other capital-intensive businesses.

Responsibilities

  • Architect and build finance systems, including FP&A and forecasting tools integrated with existing systems, with live dashboards and analytics in place of spreadsheets.
  • Automate the close using software and AI agents, including reconciliations, accounts payable and receivable, spend review, and variance explanations.
  • Own the usage-to-invoice pipeline and ensure billing reconciles to actual robot activity.
  • Build a financial data layer connecting accounting, spend, CRM, billing, and robot operations data.
  • Model the business in code, including pricing and deal economics, fleet and financing scenarios, and the annual operating plan.
  • Take over, extend, and maintain existing finance tools as the team and business scale.
  • Build controls, checks, and audit trails to support numbers that withstand scrutiny from auditors, lenders, and investors.

Benefits

  • Fully employer-covered health insurance.
  • A managed 401(k).
  • Unlimited PTO and all federal holidays off for full-time salaried employees.
  • For hourly employees, 16 or more days of accrued paid time off and 1.5x pay on federal holidays.
  • Regular in-office meals and team social events throughout the year.
