About The Position

The Application Engineer reports to the Chief Engineer and serves as the primary owner of the application matrix and the interface between the Chief Engineer group and vehicle teams for transmission and driveline product requirements and delivery, including assembly plants. The role supports the Chief Engineer in executing designated programs and developing application requirements across variants and vehicle platforms. The engineer coordinates packaging studies, leads vehicle adaptation design studies, negotiates requirements with vehicle platforms, and owns transmission technical specifications. The role defines and tracks vehicle- and system-level functional objectives; coordinates virtual duty-cycle analysis, external interface changes, application-specific variants, and change management; and represents the Chief Engineer organization at vehicle assembly plant events. It also supports manufacturing process audits, build readiness, benchmarking, engineering assessments, regulatory documents, owner’s manuals, and compliance standards.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related degree field.
  • At least 3 years of engineering experience in product development design and release.
  • At least 1 year of propulsion systems experience.
  • Demonstrated experience working with collaborative and global teams.
  • Understanding of typical automotive manufacturing and quality processes.
  • Advanced English language skills (90% read and write).
  • Functional knowledge of Microsoft Office products: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Project.
  • Excellent work ethic, organization, and communication skills.
  • Willingness to go above and beyond.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in engineering.

Responsibilities

  • Support the Chief Engineer in executing designated programs.
  • Develop the high-level Applications Matrix with the Design System Engineer, including interface requirements for programs, variants, and vehicle platforms.
  • Ensure applications remain within the design envelopes of transmission and driveline products.
  • Coordinate packaging studies for each vehicle application to verify clearance requirements.
  • Lead advanced vehicle adaptation design studies and freezes.
  • Negotiate requirements with vehicle platforms based on product limitations and capabilities.
  • Own Transmission Technical Specifications and communicate application-specific requirements, including maximum torque, NVH, fuel economy, tire size, final drive ratio selection, and mass.
  • Define and track adherence to robust vehicle-level and system/sub-system functional objectives.
  • Lead and coordinate Virtual Duty Cycle analyses with Propulsion Systems Virtual PT (Rotational) and the Vehicle Loads / Durability team for structural duty cycles (BCxx).
  • Coordinate external interface design changes requiring platform approval and perform TOS as required.
  • Develop, manage, and communicate external design or assembly issues and change management.
  • Review and approve the Application Checklist for each CN.
  • Coordinate application-specific design variants, including TCMs, adaptive hardware, dampers, vents, low- and high-voltage wire connections, and bracket attachments, as well as controls and calibration strategies.
  • Represent the Chief Engineer organization on vehicle assembly plant requirements and events, including pilot builds, end-of-line testing, VIN marking, and build issues.
  • Drive the Layered Audits process across supplier plants to ensure manufacturing, heat-treatment, and assembly processes and control plans are robust.
  • Lead build-readiness tasks, including instrumentation plans and dynamometer support.
  • Develop a benchmarking plan with the Assistant Chief Engineer for competitive products.
  • Coordinate COE assessments of bulletins and engineering responses to bulletins with the Assistant Chief Engineer or Chief Engineer.
  • Coordinate data generation and approvals for AES/BES regulatory documents.
  • Update and coordinate approvals of owner’s manuals.
  • Update and coordinate approvals of CP and Compliance Report Standards.
