About The Position

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Sport Fish, is recruiting an Application Developer 1/2/3 for its Sport Fish Research and Technical Services Programming group in Anchorage. This position is open to Alaska residents only. The role serves as lead, co-lead, or contributing programmer on Sport Fish data collection and data management projects, with full or partial responsibility for phases of the software development life cycle. Work includes developing, implementing, and maintaining web-based applications, services, and related datasets, ranging from complex multi-layer systems to single-user data collection tools. Technologies include Angular, ColdFusion, Java, C# .NET, SQL, TypeScript, and advanced JavaScript. The position works with a range of staff and contractors, and requires creative problem-solving on varied technical challenges. Responsibilities can include designing web services; developing and optimizing SQL Server or Oracle databases; writing queries, functions, and stored procedures; and applying database normalization and optimization principles. The employee manages programming tasks independently and collaboratively, including setting deadlines, coordinating with teammates, and contributing to project planning and implementation. This is a flex position, with training, education, and mentorship intended to support development in areas of limited experience and growth at the Application Developer level for which the candidate qualifies. Under mentorship, the incumbent represents the Division of Sport Fish on departmental applications and systems, works with ADF&G staff, the Office of Information Technology, and contractors, and coordinates infrastructure and server capabilities to support division needs. The role also designs, administers, and maintains division datasets and applications, including needs assessment, research, design, and hardware or system selection, and performs ad hoc programming for unusually complex computing issues. The team includes four analyst programmers and one GIS analyst and works with statewide ADF&G staff. The position is based at the Anchorage Fish and Game office, in a private walled office. It requires working independently as well as collaboratively with division, regional, and area-office staff. A hybrid telework agreement may be available after a probationary period.
