About The Position

Sanford Health, the largest rural health system in the United States, is dedicated to transforming the health care experience and providing access to world-class health care in America’s heartland. This position involves 50% clinic and 50% OR/rounding in the hospital, managing 15-25 patients per day in clinic. It offers mixed inpatient and outpatient care, including medication management and procedural cases, with the goal of recommending and implementing treatment options. The Sports Medicine Nurse Practitioner provides advanced nursing care for athletes and physically active individuals, focusing on the prevention, diagnosis, and management of sports-related injuries and conditions. The NP works in collaboration with physicians, physical therapists, athletic trainers, and other healthcare professionals to optimize patient performance and recovery. This position also provides on-call coverage outside of regularly scheduled hours.

Requirements

  • Completion of a master’s, postmaster’s, or doctorate from an accredited nurse practitioner program accredited by the Commission on the Collegiate of Nursing Education or National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission.
  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner in each state of practice.
  • Current Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) permit to prescribe controlled substances in each state of practice.
  • State Controlled Substance License (if required by State)
  • National board certification as a Family (NP-C) or (FNP-BC)
  • Obtains and subsequently maintains required specific competencies and certifications as outlined on privilege form.

Nice To Haves

  • If Licensing prior to August 1, 1995, master's degree in nursing is preferred.
  • Experience in sports medicine, orthopedics, or rehabilitation preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct thorough musculoskeletal and neurological assessments for sports-related injuries.
  • Order and interpret diagnostic imaging such as X-rays, MRIs, and ultrasounds.
  • Develop and implement treatment plans for acute and chronic sports injuries.
  • Provide injury prevention education and wellness counseling tailored to athletes.
  • Manage rehabilitation protocols in collaboration with physical therapy and athletic training teams.
  • Assist with on-field and sideline evaluation and emergency care during athletic events.
  • Perform procedures such as joint injections, wound care, and splinting within scope of practice.
  • Educate patients on safe return-to-play guidelines and injury prevention strategies.
  • Document all clinical care accurately in the electronic health record.
  • Participate in sports medicine clinics, outreach programs, and research activities.
