About The Position

The Physician Assistant (PA) or Nurse Practitioner (NP) provides assessment, triage, and therapeutic management of patient/family needs throughout the disease process as an integral part of an interdisciplinary team. The NP/PA provides optimal patient care, from diagnostic to prognostic matters, in collaboration with the attending supervising/collaborating physician(s). This role involves obtaining medical histories, performing physical examinations, reviewing/ordering diagnostic/therapeutic tests and radiologic results, and formulating/managing patient treatment plans. The NP/PA may perform procedures, prescribe treatment and medications, and in some specialties, may have autonomous practice. They may also function as a first or second assistant on operative cases and respond to emergency situations. Additionally, the NP/PA educates patients/families, provides psychosocial support, ensures appropriate documentation, and maintains high standards of ethical behavior and professionalism. Continuous engagement in projects that maintain and advance professional competency is expected, and they may serve as a clinical resource, preceptor, or mentor.

Requirements

  • Graduate from an accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant Program.
  • Must be appointed to the Affiliated Medical Staff of a YNHHS hospital and credentialed through the Medical Staff process.
  • Evidence of current competence to practice must be provided via reference letters.
  • For PAs: Active PA Certification (NCCPA), Connecticut PA License, ACLS/BLS Certified, DEA License (if applicable).
  • For NPs: Connecticut RN and NP Licenses, Board Certification, ACLS/BLS Certified, DEA License (if applicable).
  • Additional certifications (e.g., PALS, NRP) may be required based on specialty.

Nice To Haves

  • Clinical experience in hospitalist or related specialty preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Provides assessment, triage, and therapeutic management of patient/family needs.

  • Ensures compliance with patient-related healthcare regulatory requirements, standards, and recommendations.
  • Continuously engages in projects that maintain and advance professional competency.
  • Serves as a clinical resource for new house staff and may provide service-specific orientation.
  • Consistently demonstrates high reliability organizational behaviors through reporting safety events as well as near misses.
  • May serve as a clinical preceptor for NP/PA students and other healthcare professionals.
  • May serve as a mentor to pre-PA/NP candidates.
  • May collaborate on research, quality assurance, and performance improvement projects.
  • Assists with the formation of protocols that will be applied to clinical practice or further their educational and clinical expertise.
