About The Position

We are seeking an experienced Apigee API Platform Development Engineer to lead the design, security, and management of our APIs and API gateway platform. In this role, you will leverage deep expertise in Apigee API traffic management, REST API security patterns (Basic Auth, OAuth 2.0, mTLS), and CDN integration (Akamai) to ensure our APIs are scalable, secure, and high-performing. You will also play a key role in Apigee architecture oversight and spearhead our transition from Apigee Edge to Apigee Hybrid deployment. The ideal candidate is a Senior API Platform Engineer with 8+ years of experience (including substantial Apigee Edge/Hybrid experience) in building enterprise-grade API management solutions, designing robust API proxies and flows, and implementing advanced security and traffic-control policies.

Requirements

8+ years of software engineering experience.
At least 5 years focused on API management and Google Apigee platform (Apigee Edge and/or Apigee Hybrid).
Proven track record of designing, developing, and optimizing large-scale API solutions using Apigee in enterprise environments.
Hands-on mastery of Apigee Edge and Apigee Hybrid.
Deep understanding of Apigee’s core architecture and components (Edge Management Server, Router, Message Processor, Analytics services, Developer Portal, Cassandra data store, ZooKeeper coordination, etc.).
Strong knowledge of REST API security standards and protocols.
Well-versed in OAuth 2.0 (client credentials, authorization code flows), JSON Web Tokens (JWT), API key management, TLS/mTLS encryption.
Demonstrated experience working with Akamai CDN or similar edge delivery networks.
Familiarity with Kubernetes and cloud infrastructure (GCP, AWS, or Azure).
Experience with containerization and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes).
Strong DevOps/Automation skills.
Proficiency in CI/CD pipelines, scripting, and infrastructure-as-code (Terraform/Helm).
Solid grasp of RESTful API design principles and best practices.
Proficiency in at least one programming or scripting language (JavaScript, Java, Python, etc.).
Excellent troubleshooting skills.
Strong communication skills.
Ability to document designs, processes, diagrams, and guidelines for both technical and non-technical audiences.
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field.

Nice To Haves

A Master’s degree in a relevant field is a plus.
Familiarity with microservices architecture and frameworks (e.g., Java Spring Boot or Node.js for backend services) is a plus.

Responsibilities

Lead the design, security, and management of APIs and API gateway platform.

Configure and troubleshoot the full Apigee stack, from API proxy design, shared flow development and tracing, to underlying platform services.
Work with Akamai CDN or similar edge delivery networks in conjunction with an API gateway.
Design and debug request flows involving an external CDN layer.
Utilize edge networks for improving API performance and security.
Automate Apigee deployments and configuration using CI/CD pipelines, scripting, and infrastructure-as-code (Terraform/Helm).
Build scalable web services following RESTful API design principles.
Write custom Apigee policies (JavaScript/Node.js, Java callouts) or automate tasks.
Troubleshoot complex API issues across the entire request lifecycle.
Analyze API logs, debug policies, and use Apigee’s tracing/analytics tools.
Work cross-functionally with developers, operations, security, and business stakeholders.
Document designs, processes, diagrams, and guidelines.
