About The Position

Reporting to the Senior Asset Protection Manager, the Asset Protection Investigator serves as a key member of the Risk Management Department, responsible for supporting the organization’s efforts to deter and prevent theft, fraud, and loss of company assets across all Goodwill locations. This role involves proactive observation, investigation, and enforcement of company policies while maintaining a strong focus on safety, integrity, and customer service. The Asset Protection Investigator upholds and promotes the Mission, Vision, and Values of the organization at all times, ensuring that all actions align with company standards and legal guidelines.

Requirements

  • Minimum of one year’s experience in retail Asset Protection-related field.
  • Flexible working hours to include evenings and weekends.
  • Strong understanding of theft deterrence strategies and investigative techniques.
  • Working knowledge of relevant laws and procedures concerning theft prevention and detainment.
  • PC proficiency using Word and Excel; experience with using the Internet and Outlook is a must.
  • Must possess excellent organizational skills and effective time management.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communications skills.
  • Excellent writing skills with good grammar and English.
  • Must have the ability to work in a diverse and accelerated environment with ingenuity and flexibility.
  • Must have the ability to follow directions accurately and complete assigned tasks in a timely manner.
  • Must provide proof of identification and eligibility to work in the United States of America.
  • Must have a valid California driver’s license.
  • Must pass drug screening and criminal background check.
  • Must not present a direct threat of safety and health to self, others or property.
  • Must immediately inform Supervisor of any arrests and/or convictions that occur while employed at Goodwill.
  • Able to perform the duties of the job description with or without reasonable accommodation.

Nice To Haves

  • Wicklander-Zulawski (WZ) or similar interview/interrogation training preferred
  • Experience working with ORC (Organized Retail Crime) investigations preferred

Responsibilities

  • Monitor, identify, and report conditions or behaviors that pose safety or security risks to employees, program participants, and customers.
  • Conduct surveillance (CCTV and floor observations) to identify suspicious activity.
  • Detect, investigate, and document internal and external theft, fraud, and policy violations.
  • Prepare clear, accurate, and detailed incident reports and case documentation.
  • Review transportation logs, route documentation, and related records; initiate investigations when indicators of loss, misuse, or suspicious activity are identified.
  • Conduct professional, lawful interviews with employees related to incidents of loss, policy violations, or investigative findings.
  • Serve as a witness during policy-related interviews and investigative meetings as required.
  • Partner with Asset Protection leadership and Human Resources to determine appropriate investigative outcomes and resolutions.
  • Collaborate with store leadership, the Risk Management Department, and law enforcement when appropriate.
  • Testify in court or internal proceedings when required.
  • Maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information responsibly.
  • Support employee training and development initiatives with a focus on asset protection awareness, safety, and loss prevention best practices.
  • Ensure all investigative and detention activities remain within California legal guidelines and company policy.
  • Prepare timely, accurate, and thorough investigative reports and maintain required documentation for company records; respond to law enforcement requests within established timelines.
  • Perform employee bag checks and personal property inspections in coordination with store management and the Asset Protection team
  • Conduct compliance audits to evaluate adherence to operational, safety, and asset protection standards as needed.
  • Maintain and update alarm codes and emergency contact lists for all locations.
  • Prepare purchase orders and process invoices for department needs.
  • Coordinate services with external vendors.
  • Ensures compliance with all Goodwill Industries® Sacramento Valley Northern Nevada policies, CARF standards, and safety and security regulations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
