About The Position

The Violence Against Women Intervention and Support Services (VAWISS) provides a comprehensive range of services to support women and children seeking safety from violence. The program includes the Y Women's Emergency Shelter, which offers refuge, 24/7 phone support, and referrals to community resources. Additionally, the Stopping The Violence Outreach Services and the PEACE Program offer community-based support, counseling, and group activities to empower women and assist children who have witnessed violence. Housing Outreach is also available to aid in navigating housing systems and provide short-term housing subsidies. Reporting to the Manager of VAWISS, this front line position will work as part of the Shelter Services team to provide service excellence in the areas of support and advocacy to clients and residents of the Y Women’s Emergency Shelter. This position also has the responsibility of promoting an atmosphere of caring and safety for the women and their children.

Requirements

  • Human Services Certificate or equivalent
  • Experience working in Transition House an asset
  • Extensive knowledge of the dynamics of violence against women in relationship and its effects on children and the family
  • First Aid is a requirement to work at the Y shelter – if you do not have current First Aid it will be expected that you will sign up for and attend the next session offered by the YMCA-YWCA.
  • Have a solid gender analysis of violence against women and will work from an intersectional feminist practice
  • Have a thorough understanding of the dynamics of violence and intimate partner relationship and the response that children have to this
  • Understands the difference between feminist systems and systems approaches and is committed to the feminist approach
  • Have strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Have the ability to work independently

  • Able to work in an environment that is often stressful and chaotic
  • Obtain a clear driver abstract and the appropriate level of insurance
  • Successful candidate will be required to provide 3 satisfactory references
  • Successful candidates will be required to provide a current and satisfactory Criminal Record check with a Vulnerable sector search issued no later than six (6) months preceding the start date.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver services to women and their children using a team approach based on intersectional feminist framework and a thorough understanding of the Violence Against Women.
  • Perform all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the Kamloops YMCA-YWCA policies, standards and procedures as directed by supervisor.
  • Maintain confidentiality on all matters relating to the affairs of the YMCA-YWCA and in particular, the affairs of the women and children involved in shelter services.
  • Assess, for suitability, requests for shelter services from community agencies and women identifying violence/abuse as their primary issue.
  • Provide one on one and telephone support for residents and nonresidents.
  • Accompany or arrange for accompaniment of clients to court or other appointments
  • Liaise with government ministries and other community agencies to advocate on behalf of the clients.
  • Manage client information, activities, appointments and one on one support sessions in individual case files, using proper record keeping standards.
  • Gather and report statistics on a monthly basis, through the provincial data management program
  • Maintain and oversee confidential case files on children registered in the program.
  • Adherence to the Child Protection Policy
  • All shifts have a chore list with light housekeeping duties such as sweeping, mopping and wiping down counters. Keeping fridges and cupboards tidy and free of expired food
  • Night shift for the shelter includes sweeping and mopping of main floors, cleaning the main floor bathroom and generally tidy up of house.
  • Menu planning, grocery shopping, cooking and cleaning
  • Attending staff meetings and other required training
  • Other duties as required
