About The Position

Student Fundraisers serve as catalysts for making an impact on campus through alumni and parent interaction and fundraising. Donations enable American University to provide scholarships, support campus operational needs, and improve student life. Student Fundraisers advocate for the importance of philanthropy and serve as ambassadors for the university. Through this position, Student Fundraisers will be given the opportunity to strengthen their interpersonal communication skills and expand their network while soliciting donations for the university. It is a unique opportunity to catch a glimpse of life post-graduation while creating a lasting impact as a student.

  • Positive attitude about engaging with constituents and representing the university well.
  • Natural ability to conduct a conversation both in person and over the phone.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Ability to problem solve in a short period of time.
  • Willingness to learn and grow as a fundraiser.
  • Exhibit utmost care and discretion in the handling of constituent contact information, giving history, and other confidential and private information.

Nice To Haves

  • This position is available only to enrolled American University students.
  • Student Fundraisers are expected to select three calling shifts that they are responsible for working weekly.
  • The Student Fundraisers will have the ability to select the shifts that fit best with their schedule upon hire.
  • If possible, it is imperative that 1 of the 3 shifts be a weekend shift.
  • The shift times are as follows: Monday - Thursday: 6:00pm - 9:00pm, Sunday A-Shift: 1:00pm - 4:30pm, Sunday B-Shift: 5:30pm - 9:00pm.
  • Other work hours are available based on the needs of University Advancement.
  • Calling for AU Phonathon will be done in person in our designated call center following pertinent health and safety guidance.

Responsibilities

  • Utilize the calling software, VanillaSoft, to secure gifts from external constituents including but not limited to alumni and parents.
  • Educate prospective alumni and parent donors on the importance of philanthropy in addition to updating them on campus news, needs, and events.
  • Attend trainings/retreats to evaluate and improve individual performance on and off of the phone.
  • Assist AU University Advancement staff in stewarding donors to the university.
