About The Position

The Animal Shelter Specialist is responsible for the daily care, feeding, and welfare of animals in the shelter, including cleaning kennel areas and cages. They also administer medicines, assist the vet with spay/neuter surgeries, and euthanize animals as needed. They also assist the public and help with the operation of the shelter. This position requires weekend availability, so employees must be flexible to adjust hours as needed. Scheduled days and hours may vary and will be determined based on the needs of the department.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 21 years of age
  • Must be able to obtain Chemical Euthanasia Technician certification
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • 7 to 11 months of related experience and/or training
  • Or equivalent combination of education and experience, preferably with the care, welfare, and handling of animals
  • Valid Oklahoma Driver's License and a driving record acceptable to the City's insurance carrier
  • Ability to multitask and quickly change focus when needed
  • Ability to perform and/or assist in the euthanasia of all types of wild/domestic animals
  • Availability and willingness to work weekends and partial days on some holidays as needed
  • Ability to meet the required physical standards for this position
  • Ability to pass extensive background process and pre-employment drug and audio screenings

Responsibilities

  • Care for the shelter animals by feeding, watering, cleaning, and grooming animals
  • Prepare documentation, maintain files, and enter data into specialized software
  • Assist with animal evaluations
  • Educate the public on the proper care of animals
  • Prepare animals for adoption and assist with their adoption process
  • Answer telephone calls and assist callers
  • Administer medications and vaccines
  • Conduct health checks and health tests
  • Perform the euthanasia and disposal of animals
