About The Position

Performs the duties of all areas of the Animal Services operation within the Animal Services Shelter Facility. This role involves assisting with requests for assistance necessary to ensure compliance with Colorado and Mesa County animal regulations and laws. It may include observation and documentation of evidence to assist Animal Services Officers. The position performs duties such as data collection, entry, management, and auditing, cashiering, filing, dispatching, answering telephones, assisting the public, and maintenance and cleaning of the facility. The specialist may investigate reports of possible disease transmission and initiate necessary actions, and may investigate and provide documentation to testify in court. The role also involves performing humane euthanasia, assisting the public with adoptions, redemptions, and releases, completing necessary paperwork, and helping citizens problem-solve animal control issues. This includes handling, moving, and transporting animals, assessing their behavior and physical condition, and overseeing adoption, transfer, and foster programs. The specialist provides direct monitoring of impound status and maintains the condition of animals. Responsibilities also include janitorial and light maintenance within the building and grounds, monitoring and requisitioning supplies, and cleaning/sanitizing animal holding areas. Daily tasks include feeding, watering, and evaluating animal health. Preventative maintenance is also required. The role may oversee volunteers and community service individuals, and may serve as a public relations person to educate the community on Animal Services functions and responsible pet ownership through various channels. Preparing, packaging, labeling, and transporting rabies testing samples are also duties. Clear and effective oral and written communication is essential, and the position requires working as a team member to foster a safe and positive environment. Other related duties may be assigned.

Requirements

  • Must be 18 years of age
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Any combination of education, training and experience which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities required for the job.
  • Active Colorado Driver's License

Nice To Haves

  • Training and / or experience in animal control, animal sheltering, customer service or other experience working with animals preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with requests for assistance necessary to insure compliance with Colorado and Mesa County animal regulations and laws.
  • May include observation and documentation of evidence to assist Animal Services Officers as necessary to address illegal activities regarding animal control, public health and public safety.
  • Performs duties to include the collection, entry, management and auditing of data, cashiering, filing, dispatching, answering telephones, assisting the public, maintenance and cleaning of the facility or as assigned by the Animal Services Manager.
  • May investigate reports of possible disease transmission among animals or animals to humans and initiate necessary actions within the Animal Services Facility.
  • May investigate, providing proper documentation, to testify in court for citations written and issued.
  • Performs humane euthanasia according to established training protocols.
  • Assists and advises the public as they adopt, redeem, and/or release animals.
  • Completes necessary paperwork.
  • Helps citizens' problem solve animal control issues and complaints in a proactive, professional fashion.
  • Includes frequent handling, moving, and transporting of animals, behavioral and physical assessment of animals and oversight of adoption, transfer and foster programs.
  • Provides direct monitoring of the impound status and maintains the body condition of the animals held at the Animal Services Facility.
  • Completes janitorial and light maintenance within the building and on the grounds of Animal Services; monitors and requisitions animal/janitorial supplies used with the center.
  • Cleans and sanitizes animal holding areas and facility areas on a daily or as needed basis.
  • Feed, water, and provide ongoing evaluations of animal health according to their needs.
  • Provides preventative maintenance as required.
  • May oversee volunteer, community service individuals.
  • May include serving as public relations person to educate the community regarding Animal Services functions and importance of being responsible pet owners.
  • Prepare, package, label, and transport rabies testing samples as assigned by the Animal Services Manager.
  • Works as a member of a team of professionals that fosters a safe and positive environment.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by the Animal Services Manager.
