About The Position

Performs all duties related to the public education and enforcement of Animal Services ordinances and state and local health laws. This role involves responding to citizen inquiries, investigating animal-related issues, capturing and managing animals, enforcing laws, caring for animals in the shelter, and performing public outreach. The position requires working in various weather conditions and may involve exposure to hazardous situations.

Requirements

Ability to communicate with other employees and respond to questions from the general public regarding ordinances, animal services, or animals.
Ability to interact with the public when issuing citations for ordinance violations.
Ability to appear in municipal court to testify.
Ability to work with schools and civic organizations in providing information about animal services.
Ability to contact outside agencies to provide or receive information regarding animal laboratory reports or investigations.
Ability to read and understand manuals and state and other regulations in order to record work activities, complete required records, or provide information to the public.
Knowledge of equipment necessary to restrain animals such as catch poles, trucks, and various traps and cages.
Skill in math to compute and maintain various records and measure chemicals.
Ability to develop correspondence with other state and local agencies and maintain records.
High school diploma or equivalent required.
Must be able to obtain a Basic Animal Control Officer Certification within 6 months of employment.
Must have a valid Texas driver's license.

Responsibilities

Respond to citizen inquiries regarding nuisance animals, dead animal pick-up, animal capture, and disease information.
Investigate rabies inquiries, gather victim and owner information, capture animals for quarantine, and advise on state rabies control laws.
Prepare and ship rabies specimens.
Capture and restrain, release, or dispose of wild animals such as skunks, bats, foxes, badgers, and opossums.
Manage livestock by capturing, returning, restraining, or removing from premises.
Enforce state and local laws and ordinances.
Write reports and issue citations.
Care for animals in the shelter, including feeding, grooming, verifying health status, and providing first aid.
Provide information to the public regarding laws and ordinances.
Give tours of the animal shelter.
Speak at schools and for local civic organizations.
Maintain the animal shelter, vehicles, and related equipment.
Maintain inventory in truck such as door tags and impoundment cards and restock as necessary.
Assist with animal shelter duties such as citizen contacts, dispatching calls, and cleaning the shelter and cages.
Euthanize animals and properly dispose of remains.
Participate in the on-call rotation and respond to off-duty emergency calls such as animal bites, aggressive animals, sick or injured animals, and assist other agencies as needed.
Maintain and operate the animal cremation system for mass disposal cremations.
Pick up large quantities of dead animals from veterinarians for disposal by cremation.
Work in all types of weather conditions.
Perform other duties as assigned.
