About The Position

The Shelter Services Manager provides leadership, supports the direction of the director and is responsible for the supervision of staff within the shelter team to ensure best practices in animal care and client care within the animal shelter. Responsibilities include maintaining the highest level of animal care available and ensuring all shelter staff are trained. The Shelter Services Manager ensures appropriate intake, transfer, evaluation and disposition procedures. This position hires trains, supervise, evaluates and manages the performance of shelter staff with the support of lead position(s) to ensure effective and efficient operations of the shelter and related programs. Assists the Assistant Director with administration, budgeting and management with respect to goals and objectives of shelter overall operations.

Requirements

  • Extensive knowledge of animal husbandry, including humane methods of capturing, handling, sanitation, care, feeding, and disposal of animals.
  • Knowledge of common animal diseases, zoonosis and species-specific diseases, as well as injury triage and treatment.
  • Knowledge of species and breeds of animals, both domestic and wild.
  • Must have strong project management skills, excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Must be professionally flexible and handle difficult and sensitive situations with diplomacy and discretion
  • Must be able to multitask and handle several issues simultaneously, knowledge of managerial techniques and ability to maintain effective working relationships with team members, superiors and public
  • Must work independently and confidently using superior discretion and judgement
  • Must work collaboratively and build trustworthy relationships, while working alone or with minimal supervision, must be self-motivated.
  • Must work under pressure with public audience and have patience and tact when working in difficult situations or with emotional people.
  • Ability to work in an animal shelter setting and outdoors in a variety of environmental elements.
  • Must safely handle animals that may display a variety of behaviors including dangerous animals.
  • Must work safely around various disinfectants and understand there is a risk of exposure to parasites and infectious diseases.
  • Must perform a variety of tasks including sitting, bending and standing, lifting up to 50lbs repetitively, typing, writing, answering phones and filing.
  • Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in a related field and one (1) year of animal shelter experience OR an Associate degree and three (3) years of animal shelter experience and one (1) year of supervisory experience OR graduation from high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma and five (5) years' experience in animal sheltering and two (2) years of supervisory experience.
  • Must possess a valid Florida driver's license.
  • Must qualify for commission as a notary public.
  • Must have a working phone, as employee is subject to call.
  • Tetanus and rabies (pre-exposure) inoculations will be required.

Nice To Haves

  • Must obtain Florida State Certification as an Euthanasia Technician within 6 months of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the management of daily animal care provided by the shelter team, to include proper feeding and watering of all animals, sanitation of the animal under the care of the shelter.
  • Manages animal inventory, conducts daily rounds, monitors overall herd health medically and behaviorally.
  • Ensure all staff assigned to shelter operations understand and support the mission and values of the department as set forth by the director as well as the organization’s Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Responsible for managing, training, and reviewing staff performance and assists the Assists the director with operations-related budgetary planning annually.
  • Monitors spending to ensure expenditures stay within the allotted budget amounts.
  • Provides exceptional customer service, ensures positive customer experience and resolves customer complaints.
  • Is a leader by example to staff, volunteers and customers of Pasco County Animal Services. Sets the standard for staff behavior, attitude and customer services.
  • Ability to utilize and have proficiency in the shelters animal management software, familiar with cash handling procedure and donation policy.
  • Meets regularly with staff to review procedures, practices, discuss workplace practices and collaborate with staff.
  • Maintains controlled substance records, accurate logs and tracks usage by all staff members assigned.
  • Ensures safety checks are in place to support accurate reporting, and disposition decisions are upheld.
  • Participates in and provides recommendations for euthanasia decisions, performs euthanasia as needed.
  • Must work where needed by the organization.
  • Must be willing to work irregular hours, weekends, holidays and overtime when necessary.
  • Must be flexible with schedule changes and short notice requests.
