About The Position

Essex North Shore is seeking a Companion Animals Teacher to join our team. This role involves providing engaging, hands-on instruction to high school students in the field of companion animal science. The teacher will be responsible for mapping curriculum to state frameworks, instructing students in accordance with Massachusetts Vocational-Technical Frameworks, and enforcing safety regulations. The position also requires documenting student performance and progress, collaborating with other teachers and the Cooperative Education Coordinator, and integrating technology into the curriculum. The teacher will also participate in department meetings, advisory board meetings, and keep current with changes in the career area.

Requirements

• Licensed or licensable by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education as an Animal Science Teacher.
• Satisfactory SAFIS, CORI and SORI required.
• Strong animal handling and safety skills.
• Ability to provide engaging, hands-on instruction to high school students.
• Strong communication, organizational, and classroom management skills.

Nice To Haves

• Bachelor’s degree in Animal Science, Veterinary Technology, Animal Behavior, or related field preferred.
• Significant experience working with companion animals, particularly dogs and cats.
• Knowledge of animal health, nutrition, behavior, training, grooming, and husbandry.
• Professional experience in veterinary care, grooming, training, boarding, breeding, shelter work, or a related field preferred.
• Massachusetts vocational-technical teaching licensure or eligibility preferred.
• CVT or equivalent certification.
• Bilingual preferred.
• General OSHA 30-Hour certification preferred, but required within three years of employment.
• OSHA Train-the-Trainer certification preferred, but required within five years of employment.

Responsibilities

• Map each grade curriculum to the State Frameworks.
• Provide instruction in the content in accordance with the Massachusetts Vocational-Technical Frameworks in the specified career area.
• Enforce all OSHA safety regulations within the career education setting.
• Instruct students in the field when participating in outside projects.
• Document student performance, student behavior, and student achievement within the career education setting.
• Provides review and reinforcement of new concepts; supports students in the completion of their assigned tasks.
• Demonstrate knowledge of students’ IEPs, as well as the accommodations and modifications necessary for student success; modify assignments, tests, and quizzes in collaboration with special educators, if required.
• Develop resources for students to be successful, such as models, graphic organizers, and copies of class notes, video clips, demonstrations, etc.
• Participate as a member of the career area department; collaborate with teachers within the department.
• Collaborate with teachers in academic disciplines to facilitate learning activities that are cross-curricular and project-based.
• Collaborate with the Cooperative Education Coordinator to place students in their career area.
• Maintain documentation, including student performance, behavior, progress data, notation of student absences/tardies, and conversations with parents and administrators.
• Provide content support outside of the general education classroom, as necessary.
• Integrate technology into the curriculum.
• Respond to any correspondence, both oral and written, that comes from a parent or guardian.
• Participate in conferences and meetings when appropriate; contribute observations and ideas.
• Attend Advisory Board meetings twice per year; attend Open House.
• Keep current with changes in your career area; collaborate with Advisory Board members.
• Accept additional responsibilities as may be required under the direction of the Coordinator of Career Technical & Agricultural Education.
