About The Position

Under general supervision, to investigate complaints; enforce County ordinances and State laws governing the licensing, impounding, and disposal of animals; to collect and transport animals to the animal facility; to issue citations and to arrange towing of abandoned vehicles; to respond as directed during fire and emergency situations; and to perform related work as required. The Animal Regulation Officer I is the entry-level class, where incumbents are trained and expected to promote to Animal Regulation Officer II after one year of experience. Both levels provide 24-hour/7 days per week coverage, require rotational weekends and holidays, may have fluctuating work hours, and are subject to after-hour call-out. Incumbents are required to wear a uniform. The Animal Regulation Officer II is the journey-level classification, distinguished by its advanced knowledge and skills in the field.

Requirements

• Experience working with animals performing related duties (e.g., care for sick animals, transporting animals, recordkeeping).
• Basic knowledge of animal breeds and care.
• Understanding of how to work effectively with the public.
• Familiarity with and ability to use a computer.
• Ability to learn to safely capture, restrain, and handle large and small animals.
• Ability to care for animals humanely.
• Ability to learn laws, rules, and policies pertaining to animal control and interpret them to the public.
• Ability to deal with the general public courteously and professionally, handling verbal abuse and criticism with tact and good judgment.
• Ability to oversee inmate workers.
• Ability to express oneself clearly and understandably, both orally and in writing.
• Ability to understand oral instructions and write legibly.
• Ability to conduct investigations.
• Ability to maintain adequate records.
• Ability to read a map book.
• Ability to learn to use and care for small caliber firearms.

Responsibilities

• Investigate complaints regarding animals.
• Enforce County ordinances and State laws governing animal licensing, impounding, and disposal.
• Collect and transport animals to the animal facility.
• Issue citations for violations of County ordinances/State laws.
• Arrange towing of abandoned vehicles.
• Respond as directed during fire and emergency situations.
• Patrol County roads to locate, capture, and impound stray, injured, vicious, diseased, or dead animals.
• Impound or return livestock to pasture or owner's property.
• Respond to public calls and complaints regarding animals.
• Conduct investigations of animal bites and quarantines.
• Euthanize animals as required.
• Explain County and State Animal Control laws to the public.
• Prepare written and computer-generated reports.
• Issue and collect fees for kennel and pack licenses.
• Offer testimony in court.
• Investigate complaints of animal cruelty.
• Work with tow companies, law enforcement, and other agencies.
• Keep records of abandoned vehicle abatement activities.
• Issue citations and arrange towing of abandoned vehicles.
