About The Position

Assiniboine Park Zoo is seeking one (1) Animal Nutrition Worker who will be under the supervision of the Animal Nutrition Supervisor and will prepare and provide animal diets for a diverse collection of animals as directed. This includes ensuring supplies, inventory, equipment and facilities are maintained in good order according to quality standards of cleanliness, animal food preparation, and food hygiene that meet or exceed accredited zoological practices.

Requirements

  • A high school diploma and/or GED equivalent.
  • A minimum of 2 years performing animal or food nutrition prep work.
  • Previous experience working in teams and dealing with internal customers.
  • Must possess a valid Manitoba Class 5 Driver’s License.
  • Basic technology and computer skills.
  • An equivalent combination of work experience and education may be considered.

Nice To Haves

  • Post-secondary education in zoological science or related field would be an asset.
  • A demonstrated interest in the zoo industry is considered an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Receive deliveries of bulk foodstuffs and maintain food inventory under direction of the Animal Nutrition Supervisor.
  • Cut, weigh, measure and portion individual animal diets according to direction.
  • Monitor foodstuffs for any hazards to animals and Animal Care staff.
  • Maintain records of activities in accordance with industry standards and Zoo & Leaf policies and procedures.
  • Perform daily mechanical checks, prior to operating Animal Nutrition Centre equipment, and request maintenance as required.
  • Conduct routine mechanical checks to maintain Animal Nutrition Centre equipment and request maintenance as required.
  • Work collaboratively with Veterinary Services and Zoological Operations.
  • Clean and sanitize food preparation tools, dishes and related areas.
  • Sweep, mop, and clean floors.
  • Empty trash, compost and recycling from containers and change trash liners.
  • Thoroughly clean and sanitize walls, handles, doors, shelves, fridges and freezers.
  • Monitor and notify the Animal Nutrition Supervisor regarding food, supplies and equipment in a timely manner to ensure adequate levels are available.
  • Receive, unload, inventory, and maintain food, equipment and supplies for the Animal Nutrition storage areas.
  • Re-stock and distribute supplies as requested to appropriate buildings.
  • Keep storage areas organized and free of clutter.
