City of Hope has a current opportunity to join our team as an Animal Health Technician I or II. Pay rate: Animal Health Tech I: $26.48-38.25 hr. Animal Health Tech II: $27.88-43.22 hr. Under the supervision of the Center for Comparative Medicine Clinical Veterinarian, the Animal Health Technician provides paraveterinary care and technical support in clinical and laboratory animal settings. The role requires independent judgment, adaptability, resourcefulness, and the ability to work with minimal or limited supervision.

Requirements

Completion of AVMA accredited Animal Health Technician program or a B.S (preferably in Animal Science or a biological science) that meets California Veterinary Medical Boards RVT (Registered Veterinary Technician) eligibility.
Animal Health Tech I: 0-1 year of experience in working as a veterinary assistant or technician in clinical settings.
Animal Health Tech II: 3-5 years of experience in an exclusively laboratory animal sciences/medicine setting or other applicable relevant animal experience.
Animal Health Tech I: Current California Registered Veterinarian Technician license (or obtain within 6 months of hire).
Animal Health Tech II: Current California Registered Veterinarian Technician license (or obtain within 6 months of hire).
Animal Health Tech II: AALAS certified at Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) level (or obtain within 12 months of hire).

Responsibilities

Monitor animal health and welfare by conducting routine observations, identifying signs of illness, responding to animal health concerns, and communicating findings and recommendations to veterinary staff and research personnel.
Perform a variety of veterinary technical procedures including administering medications and treatments, anesthesia and analgesia support, sample collection, diagnostic testing, necropsies, blood collection, injections, and postoperative monitoring in accordance with approved protocols and veterinary direction.
Maintain accurate and compliant documentation related to animal health, treatments, controlled substances, census data, equipment usage, and regulatory records to support institutional, federal, and accreditation requirements.
Support rodent health surveillance, quality assurance, preventive medicine, and diagnostic programs through specimen collection, laboratory coordination, sentinel animal management, and communication of test results.
Provide technical, surgical, and procedural support to investigators and research teams, including animal preparation, anesthesia monitoring, recovery support, and specialized research procedures.
Train, mentor, and support Animal Health Technicians, research personnel, students, and volunteers by demonstrating techniques, providing procedural guidance, and promoting best practices in laboratory animal care and research.
Maintain procedure rooms, surgical suites, and clinical equipment; coordinate equipment maintenance and repairs; manage medical and surgical supplies; and support animal import/export and transportation activities as needed.
Assist with regulatory compliance activities, including preparation for IACUC, AAALAC, USDA, OLAW, and other inspections, while adhering to City of Hope policies, safety standards, infection control requirements, and ethical animal care practices.
