About The Position

The purpose of this position is to perform routine and complex public safety work in the enforcement of animal control ordinances. The Animal Control Officer patrols streets to locate stray, abandoned, lost or injured animals, captures animals and transports them to the animal shelter. They respond to complaints concerning animal problems or violations of animal control ordinances, including, but not limited to, animals running at large, bites, general nuisances, vicious animals, property damage or injuries. The role also involves removing dead, injured or dangerous animals from public and private property, caring for, feeding and housing animals at the animal shelter on an as-needed basis, and observing animals in custody for indications of disease. Additionally, the position provides maintenance and upkeep for equipment and vehicles, investigates violations of animal control ordinances and issues warnings or citations as required, and appears in court to testify regarding animal control cases. The officer serves various criminal or civil notices or papers related to enforcement of animal control ordinances, assists other city departments regarding animal related incidents, and assists the public in redemption and adoption of impounded animals from the kennel. The role requires working an assigned shift using own judgment in deciding course of action, being expected to handle difficult and emergency situations without assistance, and carrying out duties in conformance with Federal, State, County and City laws and ordinances. The officer maintains contact with police supervisory personnel to coordinate investigation activities, provide mutual assistance during emergency situations and provides general information about department activities. The position requires appearing in court if necessary.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent.
  • MACA certification or ability to obtain it within six (6) months of hire.
  • Valid Missouri driver's license.
  • A minimum of 6 months experience handling or caring for animals in a shelter environment or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
