About The Position

Patrol the City and enforce the Animal Control Ordinances of the City and applicable State Laws regarding animals. Confine stray animals for specified periods in the animal shelter. Transport animals, maintain animal shelter, and feed detained animals. Apprehend animals which may be vicious in nature, sick, or dead on any public road, right-of-way; or other property as authorized within the City. Maintain accurate records and logs all of animals apprehended and locations, and communicate with owners and others of the general public. Operate mobile radio in receiving and communication information. Investigate complaints for dogs or other animals that are creating a nuisance. Answer questions regarding the licensing and disposal of animals. Assist with rabies control programs. Write reports and complete various records keeping forms. Investigate animal bite cases as required by Department Policy and State and Local Laws. Explain codes, regulations, and procedures to public, other public agencies, and city staff. Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other city employees, and the public using principles of good customer service. Issue warning notices, notices to appear, and citations. Research and prepare cases for prosecution and testify in court. Maintain inspection, enforcement, and complaint records and files. Clean kennels, vaccinate animals, and perform humane euthanasia. Perform other duties as assigned or directed.

Requirements

  • Ability to lift, crouch, crawl, as well as sit, stand, walk or run to perform animal control duties.
  • Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and exercise sound judgment in evaluating situations and in making decisions.
  • Ability to read and write clearly in communicating with other city employees and the public by oral and written means.
  • Ability to deal in a professional manner with members of the general public and have skill in public relations and community publicity.
  • Ability to operate a motorized vehicle.
  • Ability to work in an indoor environment; ability to work up to 50% of the time in an outdoor environment.
  • Ability to work effectively when surrounded by loud noise.
  • Ability to work in an environment subject to exposure to hazards (vicious, wild, rabid animals).
  • Knowledge of adoption, euthanasia procedures, and animal cruelty investigation techniques.
  • Knowledge of state laws and local ordinances pertaining to animal control such as public nuisance laws and laws governing search and seizure and legal entry to property.
  • Knowledge of humane methods of animal care, collection, and disposal.
  • Knowledge of the symptoms of animal diseases and basic animal behavior.
  • Knowledge of Basic level Microsoft Office including Word and Excel, as well as Google Suite.
  • Must be able to operate cellular phone, two-way radio, copy machine, calculator, computer, printer, and various software.
  • Must be willing and able to work various hours and shifts as assigned, including weekends and holidays.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum age of 18 years old.
  • Texas Driver’s License “Class C”

Nice To Haves

  • Previous animal control or related experience preferred.
  • Certification by the Texas Department of Health Services as a Basic Animal Control Officer preferred, or must complete a certification course within one (1) year of employment.
  • Certification by Texas Department of Health for Euthanasia or ability to obtain within one (1) year of employment.
  • Certification by Texas Department of Health as an Animal Control Officer
  • Certification by Texas Department of Health for Euthanasia
  • Customer Service Experience preferred.
