About The Position

The City of Elk Grove is seeking an Animal Care Technician (Part-time) to coordinate the Elk Grove Animal Shelter foster program. This role involves outcoming animals to foster homes, facilitating foster exams, and communicating with fosters. The ideal candidate will have strong organizational and professional communication skills, experience handling animals, and the ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.

Requirements

Completion of the twelfth (12th) grade.
One (1) year of responsible experience in an animal shelter, humane society, veterinary office, or similar setting.
Possession of, or ability to obtain by the time of appointment, an appropriate, valid California driver’s license.

Responsibilities

Coordinate the City's Animal Shelter foster program.
Outcoming animals to foster homes.
Facilitate foster exams.
Communicate with foster parents regarding appointments and challenges.
Perform a variety of technical level work in providing care for animals in the City's Animal Shelter.
Evaluate animal behavior, implement behavior modification and training.
Provide training and support to current or prospective foster parents regarding animal welfare.
Assist in performing euthanasia.
Provide routine care and support of animals.
Answer inquiries from the public regarding animal control and the City’s animal shelter.
Process impound/intake, adoption, euthanasia, and reclaim of animals.
Receive, classify, and record animals entering the shelter.
Perform behavior evaluation of animals.
Perform health checks of animals to identify illnesses.
Determine which animals will be placed for adoption based on temperament testing and evaluations.
Lift, move, and/or carry animals, apply restraints as needed.
Handle frightened, fractious, and injured animals.
Conduct health evaluations of animals.
Perform routine testing for disease as needed.
Administer injections of medication, vaccinations, tranquilizers, or other drugs.
Conduct behavior training classes for staff and volunteers.
Train animals in general obedience.
Conduct training and one-on-one counseling to adopters.
Assist with animal behavior modification planning.
Receive foster/rescue/adoption applications.
Communicate with various rescue agencies and/or foster families.
Identify animal placement outside of the City shelter.
Conduct foster exams.
Provide guidance to customers for foster inquiries and concerns.
Provide food and water for each animal, observe food consumption.
Observe animals' behavior and physical appearance, report illness/injuries to supervisory personnel.
Assist with the cleaning of enclosures and kennels.
Exercise animals and socialize animals.
Replace bedding, toys, and litter pans.
Clean linens and shelter equipment.
Maintain a clean and safe environment.
Provide information and assist members of the public searching for lost or adoptable pets.
Assist with the documentation and development of reports related to animal's behavior and suitability for adoption.
Prepare, file, and maintain adoption documentation.
Monitor inventory of supplies and request and restock needed supplies.
