About The Position

Operation Kindness Humane Society is seeking an Animal Care Technician (ACT I) to join their team. This role is crucial for providing daily care for dogs and cats in the shelter while they await their forever homes. The Animal Care Technician is on the front line of animal care, responsible for maintaining a clean and healthy environment, following proper sanitation and disease prevention procedures, and upholding high standards of husbandry. Continuous attention to cleanliness is vital for a positive client experience and the well-being of the animals. Technicians are responsible for reporting medical/behavioral concerns and personality traits that aid in adoption. Daily tasks include feeding, walking, socializing, and exercising dogs and cats in outside yards or playgroups. This role involves collaboration with other departments, such as the behavior department, to ensure consistency and structure for the animals. Continued education in animal care and behavior is provided, along with career growth opportunities.

Requirements

  • Minimum High School Diploma or equivalent
  • One year of part-time or full-time work experience for which references are available
  • Must love dogs and cats as well as have an ardent desire to help animals.
  • Comfortable being around animals (cats and dogs).
  • Patient and caring personality.
  • Positive attitude.
  • Working as a part of a team.
  • Punctual and dependable.

  • Must be able to work 10 hours sitting, kneeling, standing, walking, lifting, carrying, reaching, pushing, and pulling.
  • Must be able to pass a drug screening and standard background check.

  • Previous Kennel or Animal Care experience preferred, but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Cleans and sanitizes all animal enclosures and the kennel area per Standard Operating Procedures, utilizing the power washing (SMT) system.
  • Maintains cleanliness throughout the day by removing messes in a timely manner.
  • Performs weekly rotating deep cleaning schedules to sanitize kennel areas top to bottom.
  • Cleans and sanitizes all food and water bowls.
  • Maintains cleanliness and organization of other spaces in the kennel area and storage spaces.
  • Cleans, maintains, and removes waste from outside play yards, walking trails, and sanitizes dog porches.
  • Washes, folds, and restocks laundry.
  • Cleans, sanitizes, and organizes outside storage for portable animal crates.
  • Cleans other shelter areas and/or equipment as requested or assigned.
  • Follows all applicable SOPs.
  • Feeds all animals in care twice daily according to the color-coded measuring system.
  • Ensures all animals always have access to fresh clean water.
  • Is aware of special/prescription diets and special feeding instructions, and follows directions.
  • Organizes and cleans the food storage room.
  • Walks and exercises all dogs regularly throughout the day.
  • Ensures cats have time on the outside Catio to explore and exercise daily.
  • Follows proper safety guidelines and training protocols when interacting with animals.
  • Spends time getting to know the animals in care and socializing with them to prepare them for potential adopters.
  • Assists in loading/unloading shelter vehicles when needed.
  • Assists clients with questions while providing good customer service.
  • Works alongside volunteers and other departments to ensure a positive and kind working environment.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or requested to benefit Operation Kindness.
