About The Position

The BC SPCA is seeking an Animal Care Attendant for their Maple Ridge Animal Centre. This permanent, full-time position involves caring for the health and welfare of animals in the shelter and supporting front office staff. The role requires maintaining a clean and sanitary environment for animals and facilities, treating animals with compassion, providing proper diet and medication as directed, and upholding the SPCA's image as a caring organization. The attendant will also assist with volunteer coordination and perform other duties to ensure smooth shelter operations. Secondary responsibilities include assisting front office staff with tasks such as telephone reception, customer inquiries, animal intake, adoption procedures, sales, and record keeping, all while maintaining a courteous and friendly demeanor.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Valid Class N or 5 BC Drivers’ License and driver’s abstract
  • Demonstrable interest in all aspects of animal welfare
  • Knowledge of the geography of the Branch’s warrant area and the Shelter’s warrant area
  • A sound knowledge of animals, their breeds, characteristics and more common diseases
  • Ability to work as a team player and demonstrable well-developed interpersonal skills
  • Basic computer skills sufficient to deal effectively with necessary front office routines
  • Excellent customer service
  • Ability to prioritize demands on time
  • Philosophical harmony with the vision, mission, and strategic directions of the BC SPCA

Responsibilities

  • Work collaboratively to maintain the entire physical plant in a clean, sanitary, and efficient manner on an ongoing basis.
  • Maintain the kennels, runs, and cat cages in a clean, sanitary, and efficient manner on an ongoing basis.
  • Treat animals humanely, with compassion and concern, and transmit these values to others.
  • Provide animals with proper diet and ensure they feed and water properly.
  • Ensure the animal’s health and well-being in accordance with the society’s animal health policy, including the administration of medications as specified.
  • Maintain a high level of standards to portray the SPCA as a compassionate and caring organization.
  • Willingly help co-ordinate the supporting work of volunteers.
  • Perform other duties, as required, which are necessary to ensure the smooth operation of the shelter.
  • Collaborate with other shelter personnel to create a positive and harmonious atmosphere among staff and volunteers, enhancing team performance.
  • Assist front office staff with telephone reception, answering counter inquiries, receiving animals for surrender, adoption procedures, license and merchandise sales, and general office routines and record keeping.
  • Perform all duties in a courteous, friendly way to clients, volunteers, and other staff.
