About The Position

Napa County is seeking to fill one full-time Animal Attendant vacancy and one Extra Help Animal Attendant position at the Napa County Animal Shelter & Adoption Center. This recruitment may be used to fill future full-time, part-time, and limited-term vacancies over the next 12 months. The Animal Shelter's mission is to serve the community by providing a safe and healthy environment for citizens and their animals, while promoting animal welfare and education. Services include pet adoptions, lost and found services, pet surrender, microchipping, and licensing. The Animal Attendant role involves assessing animals for temperament and adoption suitability, feeding, caring for, exercising, and training animals. Responsibilities also include euthanizing and disposing of animals according to state laws, and promoting spaying, neutering, microchipping, and licensing. The position requires maintaining the cleanliness and sanitation of the shelter and may involve assisting with public interactions and front office tasks. Ideal candidates will have a strong affinity for animals, treat them humanely, and possess experience in animal care from settings like veterinary hospitals, humane societies, ranches, or farms. They should also be eager to learn, maintain a positive attitude, and remain calm in stressful situations.

Requirements

  • Willingness to work evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Six (6) months of experience working with domestic animals in a veterinary hospital, humane society, or other animal facility; OR, possession of a valid registration as a Veterinary Technician in California.
  • Experience on a ranch, farm, or with a humane society performing animal care and kennel work is considered qualifying.
  • Equivalent to the completion of twelfth grade including or supplemented by training in an animal-related field or in customer service.
  • Possession of a valid California Driver's License.
  • Possession of Euthanasia by Injection Certificate (may be obtained after appointment prior to permanent status).
  • Must maintain any required license, certification, or registration in good standing throughout employment.

Nice To Haves

  • Bilingual in Spanish is preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Assess animals for temperament, behavior, and adoption placement.
  • Feed, care for, exercise, and provide training for animals.
  • Euthanize and dispose of animals according to state laws.
  • Promote the benefits of spaying, neutering, microchipping, and licensing pets.
  • Perform necessary work in maintaining the Animal Shelter and related areas in a clean and sanitary condition.
  • May assist with public and front office staff.
