The Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Minnesota is seeking a full-time ABA board-certified/eligible Cardiac Anesthesiologist. Academic rank, compensation, and appointment track will be based on qualifications and experience. The University of Minnesota Medical Center is a quaternary care academic institution with an adult and congenital cardiac surgical program that cares for over 1,000 patients per year. The Department of Anesthesiology is committed to creating a legacy of discovery, innovation, and compassion in patient care, research, and the education of leaders in anesthesiology. The Division of Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology is focused on three areas of excellence: patient blood management and bloodless cardiac surgery, clinical research in advanced hemodynamic monitoring and coagulation management, and technology-enhanced education, including virtual reality TEE simulation and eye-tracking tools. All faculty within the division are fellowship trained, hold NBE Advanced Perioperative TEE certification, and are certified or eligible for ABA subspecialty certification in Adult Cardiac Anesthesiology. Faculty do not sit their own cases but work with cardiothoracic anesthesiology fellows, residents, and CRNAs. The role involves caring for patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting, valve replacement and repair (sternotomy, mini-thoracotomy and robotic), and combined procedures. A substantial proportion of patients undergo aortic surgery, including aneurysm repair and dissection. The department performs approximately 50 heart transplants and 60 VADs per year, as well as approximately 70 lung transplants per year. There is a strong relationship with cardiac surgeons, with collaboration on research and quality improvement, and participation in cardiac surgical M&M. The division has an ACGME-accredited Adult Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology Fellowship with 3 positions and a cardiac resident rotation that accommodates 1-2 anesthesiology residents per month. Faculty are encouraged to actively present at national meetings and publish in recognized anesthesia journals. Mentorship and ample research and QI opportunities are available for interested individuals. There is also ample opportunity for formal teaching of residents and fellows in and outside the OR. The Department of Anesthesiology is driven to eliminate pain, improve patient outcomes and train the next generation of anesthesiologists, cultivating a culture of inquiry where best medical practices are determined through clinical and scientific methods as well as translational investigation.
