About The Position

The Medical Director Anesthesiology, BayCare Medical Group, is a pivotal role within BayCare Health System, providing unified physician leadership for anesthesiology services across its acute care hospitals. This position ensures high-quality, safe, and efficient anesthesia care, fostering a supportive environment for anesthesiologists, CRNAs, and Anesthesiologist Assistants. The role involves deep collaboration with hospital leadership, surgical services, and the Vice President of Perioperative Services to enable system-wide clinical performance. The Medical Director is the senior physician leader responsible for clinical excellence, professional practice, workforce leadership, and operational performance, directly leading employed anesthesiologists, CRNAs, and Anesthesiologist Assistants across various hospital settings. Operating within an integrated, hospital-partnered model, this role works closely with hospital Presidents, Chief Medical Officers, surgical and perioperative leaders, nursing, and enterprise partners to ensure safe and efficient anesthesia coverage supporting BayCare’s acute care mission. The position is designed around a dyad leadership model, partnering with an anesthesia operations leader to share accountability for quality, access, operational reliability, physician experience, and long-term sustainability.

Requirements

  • MD or DO required
  • Board Certified Anesthesiologist
  • Significant leadership experience in a hospital-based or large medical group anesthesiology practice
  • Demonstrated success in physician leadership, clinical operations, quality improvement, and workforce management
  • Proven ability to lead through influence in a collaborative, matrixed health system

  • Experience leading anesthesia services across multiple hospitals strongly preferred

Responsibilities

  • Ensure delivery of high-quality, safe, and evidence-based anesthesia care across all hospital-based settings.
  • Establish and oversee anesthesia clinical standards, protocols, quality metrics, and policies.
  • Drive performance in patient safety, perioperative outcomes, and regulatory compliance.
  • Reduce unwarranted variation while supporting appropriate site-specific clinical needs.
  • Lead quality improvement initiatives using performance data and key clinical metrics.
  • Partner with hospital quality, safety, and risk leaders to ensure high reliability in acute care environments.
  • Serve as leader, mentor, and advocate for anesthesiologists, CRNAs, and Anesthesiologist Assistants.
  • Recruit, onboard, develop, and retain a high-performing anesthesia workforce.
  • Partner with medical group and hospital leadership to design and execute a multi-year anesthesia workforce strategy.
  • Foster a culture of professionalism, accountability, collaboration, and mutual respect.
  • Promote team-based care models within perioperative and procedural environments.
  • Champion clinician well-being, sustainability, and joy in practice.
  • Develop emerging physician leaders and support succession planning.
  • Serve as the physician lead for anesthesia services across BayCare acute care hospitals.
  • Partner to optimize anesthesia staffing models, scheduling, coverage, and call structures.
  • Support operating room efficiency, throughput, and procedural access.
  • Collaborate closely with surgery, perioperative services, nursing, and hospital operations.
  • Provide physician leadership for operational improvement initiatives impacting anesthesia and perioperative performance.
  • Support responsible stewardship of clinical and financial resources.
  • Support BayCare’s surgical, procedural, and hospital growth strategies through scalable anesthesia coverage models.
  • Anticipate and plan for growth in surgical volume, new programs, and new sites of care.
  • Ensure anesthesia services remain aligned with evolving hospital, perioperative, and service line needs.
  • Contribute to system planning for new ORs, procedural areas, and acute care expansion.
  • Serve as a physician voice in enterprise discussions related to perioperative and acute care strategy.
  • Serve as a key physician partner to Hospital Presidents, Chief Medical Officers, and perioperative leadership.
  • Maintain close collaboration with the Vice President of Perioperative Services, BayCare Health System, ensuring alignment across enterprise perioperative strategy, standards, and execution.
  • Ensure anesthesiology is fully integrated into hospital governance, planning, and operational forums.
  • Build strong, trust-based relationships with surgical leaders and other hospital-based specialties.
  • Represent anesthesiology in medical group, hospital, and enterprise leadership settings.
  • Support alignment across hospitals while maintaining consistent standards of care.
