About The Position

Under the supervision of the OR Clinical Manager and general direction of an anesthesiologist, this role is responsible for coordinating and managing activities related to the Anesthesia Department. The Anesthesia Tech provides anesthesia support services throughout the medical center in conjunction with surgical and non-surgical procedures requiring anesthesia. This role acts as an expert in anesthesia technology and serves as a resource for staff in the use, assembly, and care of anesthesia equipment. Responsibilities include maintaining equipment inventory, coordinating stocking of various anesthesia carts, overseeing the cleanliness and readiness of anesthesia workstations and machines, reviewing and managing anesthesia supplies, ensuring daily apparatus checks are completed, and interpreting manufacturer guidelines for equipment use and safety. The role also involves assembling equipment during emergencies, maintaining logs for equipment maintenance and repair, participating in performance appraisals and the interview process for new technicians, and assisting with various anesthesia procedures including invasive monitoring and intubations. Adherence to infection prevention guidelines and Standard Precautions is critical. The Anesthesia Tech also reviews the daily schedule to coordinate patient care needs, works with the team to ensure efficient and quality patient support, maintains patient confidentiality, answers the telephone, supports resource stewardship, and coordinates orientation and training for new personnel. Participation in clinic activities, unit meetings, and in-services is also expected.

Requirements

  • 1 or more years of clinical experience as an anesthesia technician.
  • Basic knowledge of cardiac and respiratory anatomy and physiology as it relates to anesthetized patients.
  • Knowledge of operating room procedures, sterile technique, standard precautions and anesthesia care.
  • Analytical and visual ability in order to set-up, calibrate, operate, clean and maintain complex anesthesiology equipment.
  • Good reading comprehension, accurate spelling, and legible handwriting.
  • Effective and diplomatic oral communication.
  • BCLS or ACLS Certification

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and manage activities related to the Anesthesia Department.
  • Provide anesthesia support services throughout the medical center.
  • Act as an expert in anesthesia technology and a resource for staff.
  • Maintain an inventory of all anesthesia equipment.
  • Coordinate and supervise stocking of Difficult Intubation, Pediatric, Invasive Monitoring, Block and Epidural Carts.
  • Oversee and supervise stocking, cleanliness, and readiness of Anesthesia Omnicell Workstations, Anesthesia Machines, and specialty carts.
  • Review anesthesia supplies for supply chain compliance, establish par levels, maintain inventory log, and oversee the ordering process.
  • Ensure completion of daily anesthesia apparatus checks and maintain documentation.
  • Interpret manufacturer’s procedure and guidelines for use and safety of equipment.
  • Maintain and assemble Level One Rapid Infusers during emergencies.
  • Maintain a record of all equipment used exclusively by the Anesthesia Department.
  • Maintain a timely written log regarding maintenance/repair of anesthesia equipment.
  • Maintain accurate records associated with the care and use of anesthesia equipment and supplies.
  • Participate in annual performance appraisals.
  • Participate in the global availability of Anesthesia equipment including ordering, purchasing and inventory.
  • Participate in and assist in coordinating the interview and selection process for Anesthesia Technicians.
  • Assist with all general, regional and MAC anesthesia procedures, set up invasive monitoring equipment, difficult intubations and emergency procedures.
  • Assist during emergency procedures as needed and directed by the anesthesiologist.
  • Set up Swan Ganz including flushing the line and attaching cardiac output monitoring devices.
  • Set up and assist with difficult intubations and insertion of double lumen endotracheal tubes.
  • Set up and assist with insertion of Spinal and Epidural catheters.
  • Set up cell saver.
  • Set up hot line, arterial line, IV CVP including flushing of the line when necessary.
  • Adhere to infection prevention guidelines and Standard Precautions.
  • Use good hand washing technique, adhere to isolation policy, help keep Operating Room clean, dispose of infectious waste properly, and appropriately clean reusable items.
  • Initiate appropriate emergency measures for cardiac/respiratory arrest.
  • Review schedule of the day and coordinate/prioritize patient care needs.
  • Work with the anesthesia tech team to ensure assignments are appropriate to support plans of care in efficiency and quality measures.
  • Maintain confidentiality and use discretion when discussing patient information.
  • Answer the telephone promptly and courteously and relay calls/messages to the appropriate person in a timely manner.
  • Support stewardship of resources and manage the anesthesia supply and equipment inventory appropriately.
  • Coordinate orientation and training of new personnel.
  • Coordinate any necessary in-services with the OR Clinical Educator and/or anesthesia department and identify educational needs.
  • Assist other team members by offering assistance to distribute the workload.
  • Attend unit and Medical Center staff meetings/inservices, and be responsible for reading and comprehending all posted minutes and memos.
