AI First Android Developer

OPENLANE•Carmel, IN
•$85,000 - $125,000

About The Position

We are hiring AI-first Software Engineers (Android) to build, evolve, and scale OPENLANE’s digital marketplace mobile experiences. These roles are for engineers who already treat AI as a first-class development tool, not a novelty. You’ll use AI to move faster, ship higher-quality software, and reduce operational and development toil, while still applying strong engineering judgment, ownership, and systems thinking. You’ll work on customer-facing wholesale marketplace apps, partnering closely with Product, Senior Android engineers, iOS, and backend teams. AI is an accelerator. Engineering ownership still matters.

Requirements

  • 3+ years professional Android development (or equivalent depth)
  • Proficiency in Kotlin
  • Experience shipping at least one production Android app
  • AI-first mindset and active use of AI development tools with critical evaluation of outputs
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent practical experience
  • Core Engineering Skills: Experience shipping production Android features in a team codebase
  • Solid Kotlin and modern Android UI skills; willingness to work in a mid-migration codebase
  • Comfort with CI, tests, and code review
  • Growing end-to-end ownership of features with guidance from Senior engineers
  • AI-First Mindset: Actively uses AI development tools (code copilots, AI debuggers, test generators)
  • Curious about applying AI to real customer and business problems
  • Able to critically evaluate AI outputs instead of blindly accepting them
  • Comfortable learning and adapting in a fast-changing tool landscape
  • Technical Experience: Kotlin; Jetpack Compose and/or XML Views
  • Coroutines; basic DI (Hilt); ViewModels / StateFlow-style UI state
  • REST networking; local persistence basics
  • Familiarity with feature flags and mobile analytics
  • Unit testing (e.g. MockK, Turbine) and willingness to grow UI/instrumentation testing

Nice To Haves

  • Compose in production
  • Exposure to Hilt, Room, WorkManager, or CameraX
  • Marketplace / e-commerce mobile experience
  • Familiarity with hybrid WebView surfaces

Responsibilities

  • Implement Android features across seller and buyer marketplace experiences
  • Ship Compose UI with clear state/events; touch legacy XML only as needed with support
  • Write unit tests and meet team CI bars (formatting, coverage)
  • Use AI tools daily to accelerate coding, tests, and debugging—then verify before merge
  • Collaborate with Product/design and learn shared platform concerns (flags, analytics, auth) under Senior guidance
  • Pair with iOS counterparts on shared product behavior
