About The Position

The Anatomy Laboratory Director provides academic and administrative leadership for the anatomy laboratory under the direction of the Anatomy Thread Leader. This faculty role ensures excellence in anatomy education, laboratory operations, safety, and cadaver-donor stewardship. The Director oversees all aspects of lab function, including instructional support, personnel management, facilities, and regulatory compliance, while actively contributing to the medical curriculum through teaching and collaboration with faculty. This position is critical to the success of the BYU School of Medicine, a new organization within the university. As the school continues to launch and grow, a successful candidate must demonstrate adaptability and a willingness to take on evolving responsibilities and assignments to support its effective implementation and ongoing operations.

Requirements

  • Terminal degree (Ph.D., MD, etc.) in a relevant field with substantial anatomy teaching and cadaveric dissection experience. The required degree must be completed by the start date.
  • Expertise in cadaveric dissection and at least 5 years of managing a professional school anatomy laboratory.
  • Alignment with and commitment to the mission, values, and spiritual aims of Brigham Young University and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
  • Successful candidates are expected to support and contribute to the academic and religious missions of the university within the context of the principles and doctrine of the affiliated church.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure that dissection, teaching, and lab-based assessments are coordinated with each of the organ system blocks under the direction of the Anatomy Thread Leader.
  • Ensures anatomical content is aligned with learning objectives and assessment strategies.
  • Participates in teaching activities, including dissection, prosection-based instruction, small-group sessions, and simulation-based learning.
  • Oversees the development and quality of prosections and other instructional materials.
  • Collaborates with faculty to support the creation and implementation of laboratory assessments, including quizzes, examinations, and practical sessions.
  • Oversees the grading of anatomy lab assessments. Enters student scores into the learning management system.
  • Oversees the use and maintenance of audiovisual and instructional technology within the anatomy lab.
  • Schedules the anatomy lab space, staff and faculty for all school of medicine educational activities.
  • Provides strategic direction and day-to-day leadership for anatomy laboratory operations.
  • Manages laboratory facilities, including equipment, storage systems, ventilation, and instructional technology.
  • Oversees procurement, inventory, and maintenance of consumables, dissection instruments, PPE, preservation chemicals, and teaching resources.
  • Supervises the anatomy laboratory staff (TA’s, etc.).
  • Ensures efficient workflow and operational support for teaching, research, and cadaver-donor program activities.
  • Manages cadaver-donor program operations, including tracking, chain-of-custody documentation, regulatory compliance, and oversight of cadaver-donor delivery, storage, placement, and preparation.
  • Ensures the respectful, ethical, and appropriate use of cadaveric donors throughout all instructional activities.
  • Working in conjunction with the Anatomy Thread Leader, direct an annual body donation memorial service.
  • Ensures full compliance with OSHA regulations, chemical hygiene standards, hazardous waste protocols, and institutional safety policies.
  • Develops, implements, and maintains standard operating procedures (SOPs), safety guidelines, and emergency response plans.
  • Collaborates with Environmental Health & Safety and Risk Management offices to support institutional safety initiatives.
  • Provides training for faculty, staff, and students in safe anatomical laboratory practices and proper use of PPE.
  • Conducts routine inspections and maintains documentation to support internal audits and external regulatory reviews.
  • Upholds the highest standards of respect, confidentiality, and professionalism in all cadaver donor-related activities.
