About The Position

The Anatomic Pathology Technician (AP Tech) provides services in the Surgical Pathology Gross Room, a laboratory within the Division of Surgical Pathology, Department of Pathology. This role involves receiving surgical specimens from hospital staff and couriers for gross and microscopic examination, confirming patient identity and specimen labeling requirements, triaging specimens for diagnostic tests, and preparing specimens for transport by courier. The AP Tech will also accession all cases using surgical pathology software, ensuring accurate associated billing for surgical specimens. Responsibilities include retrieving tissue from various patient care areas, facilitating problem resolution for unacceptable specimens, performing gross examination of all biopsies and some non-complex surgical excisions, and assisting with microtomy, staining, and coverslipping of frozen section slides. Additionally, the role involves answering the laboratory phone, opening surgical specimens for appropriate fixation, assisting with storage shelf organization, inventory management, and equipment maintenance and cleaning. OSU East Hospital Gross Room responsibilities include receiving slides from courier, preparing slides and specimens for courier, and filing slides. Hours of work vary depending upon the assigned rotation.
