About The Position

Battelle is seeking an Anatomic Pathology Senior Technician for a full-time opportunity in Columbus, OH and West Jefferson, OH. This role is part of Battelle's Life Science Research business and supports the Pathology department. The position involves performing necropsy procedures on small and large animals, trimming tissues for histopathology processing, and generating data for various study types. The role operates Monday through Friday and requires overtime on nights and weekends, on-call availability, and work on holidays.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree in Animal Science, Zoology, or a related biology field with 3 years of applicable experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience in a related field
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to obtain and maintain certification in the Biological Suitability Assessment Program (BSAP)
  • Ability to obtain and maintain Department of Justice (DoJ) Security Risk Assessment (SRA) approval
  • Ability to obtain and maintain CDC approval to work with Biological Select Agents and Toxins (BSAT) material
  • Willingness to work in BSL-2 and BSL-3 (biocontainment) environments and ability to wear appropriate respiratory protection
  • Willingness to be immunized with FDA-licensed vaccines and Investigational New Drugs (IND) recommended for those at occupational risk of exposure to biological agents
  • Willingness to participate in random drug screening
  • Ability to respond appropriately to various alarms and potential emergency situations
  • Medically fit to perform all assigned duties while wearing appropriate respiratory equipment in a laboratory setting
  • Ability to work night, weekend, and holiday hours
  • Willingness to commute between Columbus, OH and West Jefferson, OH locations

Responsibilities

  • Performing necropsy examinations of small and large laboratory animals, including gross necropsy, tissue collection, fixation, and labeling of specimens
  • Working with highly hazardous biological and toxic materials in Biological Safety Level 2 (BSL-2) and Biological Safety Level 3 (BSL-3) laboratory environments
  • Processing tissues for the histopathology team following established SOPs and safety protocols; cross-training in histology (e.g., embedding, sectioning, staining) to provide flexible workflow coverage
  • Analyzing antimicrobial use and resistance data and supporting outbreak detection and response, including coordination with laboratories and healthcare partners
  • Training and guiding staff on specific necropsy skills and serving as technical lead on portions of studies
  • Revising and authoring SOPs, co-authoring methods and study memos, and maintaining study files in accordance with standard operating procedures, protocol requirements, and client specifications
  • Recording data and performing quality control reviews in accordance with Good Laboratory Practices (GLP); preparing and submitting study files and forms to Quality Control or Quality Assurance
  • Recognizing when technical operations deviate from accepted practices, preparing deviation reports as needed, and reporting observations and problems clearly and concisely
  • Acting as the laboratory technical point of contact; maintaining laboratory cleanliness, managing inventory, ordering and receiving supplies, and overseeing waste management
  • Operating and maintaining laboratory equipment including autoclaves; performing routine maintenance and calibration; preparing and archiving equipment logbooks
  • Using electronic databases for sample tracking and documenting necropsy examinations; performing basic data manipulation in a spreadsheet environment
  • Contributing to the development and validation of equipment and necropsy activities, including performing dilutions and associated mathematical calculations
  • Participating in continuous improvement and management initiatives; serving as a certified trainer, select agent custodian, and/or certified shipper as applicable
  • Executing moderately complex and non-standard assignments, exercising judgment to assess issues and recommend solutions
  • Completing standard and non-standard tasks, keeping the supervisor regularly informed of work status
