About The Position

Umicore is a global advanced materials and recycling group that develops, produces, and recycles materials for a better life. The Jewelry & Industrial Metals division specializes in products and processes based on precious metals, enabling customers to create fine jewelry, coins, high-purity glass, and industrial catalysts. This role is crucial for supporting customers with technical expertise, driving continuous improvement, and ensuring the quality and integrity of products and services. The position is responsible for sample preparation, conducting various tests (metallography, mechanical properties, metrology), analyzing data, and presenting findings in both verbal and written reports. The role also involves maintaining records, issuing Certificates of Compliance/Analysis, and communicating effectively with internal and external stakeholders. Adherence to EH&S, IMS, and security rules, as well as company confidentiality guidelines, is mandatory. The role requires occasional travel to the United States and emphasizes upholding health and safety standards and fostering a culture of care and responsibility.

Requirements

  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree in Metallurgy and Materials Science Engineering preferred (equivalent of 4 year program at a Canadian university) with knowledge of both chemical and physical metallurgy.
  • Three or four year College Diploma (eligible for CET) in Metallurgical Engineering Technology with direct shop experience will be considered.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience as a technical resource in a mid-sized industrial, preferably nonferrous metal, processing facility.

  • Comfort on a shop floor production/processing environment.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.

  • Ability to work effectively with minimal supervision once an assignment is fully understood.
  • Good understanding of WHMIS, SDSs, etc.

Nice To Haves

  • Successful completion of ISO/OHSA courses, WHMIS courses, project management courses is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technically correct answers to questions concerning product performance and requirements.
  • Answer questions regarding the scope of and issues with services provided by the company.
  • Provide technical/metallurgical support to all other departments by actively participating in and/or leading customer complaint investigations, process improvement trials, EH&S committee follow-up items, resolution of ISO audit actions, product improvement trials, service improvement trials, and document updates.
  • Participate in projects related to new alloy introduction, new service or product introduction, and equipment commissioning.
  • Perform sample preparation, testing (metallography, mechanical properties, metrology, etc.), and data analysis.
  • Provide technically correct and objective interpretation of resultant data/findings.
  • Present both verbal and written reports.
  • Maintain readily retrievable documents and records.
  • Issue Certificates of Compliance/Analysis.
  • Communicate honestly, diplomatically, and clearly with all Umicore colleagues, customers, suppliers, and service providers.
  • Follow all EH&S, IMS, and Security rules, as well as company confidentiality guidelines.
  • Uphold, respect, and ensure compliance with health and safety standards.
  • Act as a role model by fostering a culture of care and responsibility within the team.
  • Encourage and support team members to actively participate in preventive measures and continuous improvement initiatives related to health and safety activities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
