OPAL-RT Technologies is looking for an Electrical Model Development and Integration Analyst. OPAL-RT accomplishes an important part of its mission by offering state-of-the-art products, with the contribution of its Electrical Engineering Expertise division (3E), developing and providing functionalities adapted to the different technical axes of its customers, as well as specialized services and training in innovative technical fields. The 3E Division covers various vertical markets including power systems and power electronics, electric transportation and intelligent controls and protections. The 3E Division works with the various industries and support the development of turnkey simulators which are customized to the specifications of the client application, and by investing and participating in collaborative R&D projects with several labs and universities that leads to development of proof-of-concepts and new technologies to deploy. The 3E Division plays an important role along with the Platform R&D at OPAL-RT in order to provide efficient technological watch, foster innovation and develop state-of-the-art technology for various applications. The Power System Applications (PSA) team of the 3E Division covers topics related to Power System Generation, Transmission and Distribution, Protection and Control, Renewable Integration, Smart Grid applications, both in the Electromagnetic Transient Simulation and Phasor Simulation domains. Your role within the company will be to act as an expert in power system simulations within Power System Application team in the 3E Division.

Requirements

  • Master’s or Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering, with a specialization in Power Systems, Power Electronics, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience in the modeling, simulation, or analysis of electric power systems.
  • Strong understanding of electric power systems, power electronic converters, and their control strategies.
  • Knowledge of challenges related to the integration of renewable energy, Distributed Energy Resources (DERs), microgrids, energy storage systems, or data centers.
  • Experience with MATLAB/Simulink and one or more EMT simulation tools such as PSCAD, EMTP, etc.
  • Ability to analyze, validate, and interpret complex simulation results.
  • Self-motivated, curious, versatile, organized, with strong interpersonal communication skills, rigor and determination, as well as strong analytical and adaptability skills.
  • Awareness of sustainable development principles and commitment to high-quality deliverables.
  • French required.
  • Good English skills are required for reading specialized/scientific books not available in French and the use of specialized software that exists only in English.

Nice To Haves

  • Good knowledge of real-time simulation and OPAL-RT platforms (HYPERSIM, RT-LAB, ePHASORSIM, eMEGAsim), including Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) applications, is considered a significant asset.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in the development, validation, and integration of models and features for OPAL-RT simulation platforms.
  • Collaborate with technical experts within the department to productize new models and simulation tools.
  • Contribute to the development of models and features addressing current power system challenges, including the integration of distributed energy resources, renewable energy, microgrids, data centers, and power-electronics-based loads.
  • Estimate, execute, and validate design, modeling, and simulation tasks related to power systems and power electronic converters.
  • Participate in the modeling, validation, and optimization of power systems, power converters, and advanced control strategies.
  • Develop and implement simulation algorithms and equations on CPU architectures.
  • Develop example models, demonstrations, and validation cases to showcase and validate new features.
  • Contribute to automated testing, continuous integration, and model quality assurance activities.
  • Write and maintain technical documentation associated with new developments.
  • Work closely with software development teams to ensure the seamless integration of new features into OPAL-RT products.
  • Contribute to the improvement of tools and processes aimed at increasing the quality and productivity of modeling activities.
  • Collaborate with other OPAL-RT teams to deliver complete solutions that meet the needs of customer projects, product development initiatives, and research activities.
