Systems Engineering Analog IC Validation

Broadcom•Colorado Springs, CO

About The Position

The Analog IC Validation team defines, develops, and uses test procedures to ensure Broadcom products meet applicable industry standards and perform as expected in their intended applications. Engineers collaborate with analog designers, hardware and software teams to validate and debug new products in a laboratory environment, working with state-of-the-art test equipment and leading-edge storage silicon in the high-speed serial industry. The Analog Systems Engineer is involved with products from the beginning, working with analog and digital designers to define hardware test features and selecting test equipment during the design phase. Early pre-silicon work may include developing tests and automation code using test chips. Product validation combines manual and automated testing and requires careful setup changes, detailed signal validation at the products’ data rates, and strong debugging skills. After validation, the team supports customer bring-up and helps resolve customer issues.

Requirements

  • Legal authorization to work in the United States.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • At least 5 years of related work experience.
  • Solid understanding of transmission-line theory and high-speed I/O operation.
  • Some experience with sources of jitter and electromagnetic interference (EMI).
  • Experience using VNAs, TDRs, spectrum analyzers, and real-time oscilloscopes.
  • Ability to write and debug Python programs, with some experience in C and MATLAB.
  • Experience developing or debugging automated test scripts, preferably in Python.
  • Experience running analog simulation tools such as SPICE or ADS with IBIS-AMI models.
  • Solid understanding of computer architecture and system-level operation and execution.
  • Practical experience with system-level debugging and strong problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to learn new technologies quickly.
  • Good verbal, presentation, and documentation skills.
  • Ability to work both as part of a team and independently.
  • Good debugging skills and attention to detail when validating signals at the data rates used by the products.

Responsibilities

  • Architect characterization procedures and tests to ensure compliance with SAS, SATA, PCIe, NVMe, DDR4, and ONFI standards.
  • Review and execute robust validation test plans on prototype silicon.
  • Work with firmware development, high-speed I/O designers, and digital IC design teams during pre- and post-silicon validation.
  • Develop Python scripts to control test equipment and automate validation tasks.
  • Develop host software tools and applications for low-level system validation.
  • Develop signal-integrity simulation models for customer use.
  • Work with the board development team to define evaluation-board test features.
  • Partner with board development teams to identify and resolve signal-quality issues associated with evaluation- and production-card layouts.
  • Support design partners with product bring-up and resolution of signal-integrity-related customer issues.
  • Drive technical debugging and resolution of system-level issues; propose workarounds and implement solutions to complex problems.
  • Present technical information effectively to engineering teams.
  • Educate Field Application Engineers on new product features and operation.
  • Work with Technical Publications on engineering notes, data sheets, and architectural manuals.
  • Work with analog and digital designers to define hardware test features needed to test products against relevant specifications.
  • Evaluate and select test equipment during the design phase.
  • Develop tests and automation code for early pre-silicon work, potentially using test chips.
  • Support customer bring-up and debug issues encountered after validation.
