About The Position

The Refrigeration Maintenance Technician will monitor, maintain, and repair ammonia refrigeration equipment in accordance with Smithfield guidelines outlined in the PSM Program. This role ensures the safe operation of equipment and machinery, safe use of tools, and safety of others working in the immediate area. The technician will operate, repair, and maintain all assigned equipment, including ammonia equipment, compressed air, dehumidification equipment, steam, cooling systems, air and water filters, plumbing, heat exchangers, water treatment, heaters, level controls, and water systems. Responsibilities include performing troubleshooting and repair of electrical systems, electrical controls, electric motors, pumps, gearboxes, blowers/fans, and resolving equipment malfunctions by evaluating performance breakdowns, identifying root cause, safely repairing the equipment, and taking actions to prevent recurring failures. The role also involves installing, troubleshooting, and maintaining mechanical equipment, piping systems, and electrical controls/components in accordance with manufacturer’s specifications, local regulations, and Smithfield safety policies. Additionally, the technician will perform preventive and predictive maintenance schedules on mechanical equipment such as pumps, Wrap Machines, Dock Doors, Dock Locks, and Dock Levelers, used in a warehouse environment. Coordination with the supervisor regarding short-term and long-term repairs to minimize production downtime is essential. The technician will receive work orders/requests, review them to determine necessary tools, equipment, time, manpower, parts, and supplies. When responding to crisis calls, the technician will always arrive at the scene with the basic tools and equipment necessary to perform work. Ensuring all assigned work and preventative maintenance tasks are completed in a timely manner and following all work instructions and documenting all appropriate records to meet requirements set forth by OSHA, EPA, USDA, PSM, IIAR, and Warehouse management are key aspects of this role. Other duties as assigned may also be part of this position.

Requirements

  • Ammonia certification, required
  • Must be able to pass a pulmonary function test and wear respiratory protection.
  • Working knowledge of AC/DC electrical systems as they pertain to the preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair.
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and 1+ years of related experience and/or training in an industrial mechanical maintenance or food manufacturing environment; or 4 years’ direct experience in an industrial mechanical maintenance or food manufacturing maintenance environment.
  • Ability to function effectively in a team environment and interact productively with all levels of team personnel and outside contractors.
  • Ability to operate a forklift, genie lift, or scissor lift.
  • Can understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to read and write the following: work orders, instructions, daily reports, and machine manuals.
  • Ability to receive and relate orders/information using various communication devices.
  • Basic computer skills and the ability to work independently are also required for this position.

Nice To Haves

  • Vocational Diploma, Technical Diploma, or associate’s degree from a technical maintenance or vocational school, a plus.
