About The Position

The ChristianaCare Language Services department is currently recruiting for a Part-time American Sign Language Interpreter (ASL) to serve deaf and hard of hearing patients and staff, rendering information accurately and completely in compliance with all the CC Language Services and CC hospital policies and procedures. The ideal candidate will understand a variety of signing and spoken styles and registers and interpret with the highest degree of accuracy and completeness. They will demonstrate cultural competency and understand language as an expression of culture, recognize the underlying assumptions of each party about medicine, the encounter, the illness etc. and use this understanding to empower patient and provider to better understand each other. In addition, have the ability to work well under pressure and manage stressful situations.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Fluency in American Sign Language and English, the latter both oral and written

Nice To Haves

  • An associate degree or college work in ASL or any area related to science or human services highly desired
  • One to two years’ experience in a healthcare setting as a medical interpreter, preferred
  • Certification Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) preferred
