About The Position

Intermediate District 287 is seeking a part-time American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreter for its Itinerant Services. This role is crucial for ensuring full communication access between Deaf and Hard of Hearing students who use sign language and their teachers, peers, and other school personnel within the educational environment. The ASL Interpreter will be an integral member of the student's school-based team, supporting students in grades K-12 and transition-age students (18-22 years old) across 12 member districts in the west metro area. The district specializes in setting IV special education services designed to meet diverse student needs. Intermediate District 287 is committed to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment, utilizing a trauma-informed approach, offering comprehensive support services with dedicated teams, maintaining small class sizes (average 6-8 students), and prioritizing diversity and racial consciousness in hiring and retention.

Requirements

  • Completed a training program affiliated with a state-accredited educational institution.
  • Hold one of the following certifications/assessments:
  • Pathway 1: Interpreter and/or transliterator certificate from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID); OR a general level proficiency certificate at level 3 from the National Association of the Deaf (NAD); OR Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) at the 4.0 level.
  • Pathway 2: Graduate from an accredited Interpreter Training Program AND Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) with a score of 3.5-3.9.
  • Pathway 3: Graduate from an accredited Interpreter Training Program AND hold a current 2-year provisional certificate AND be willing to participate in weekly mentoring.
  • For non-certified interpreters: Willingness to participate in weekly mentoring.

  • Certified ASL Interpreters may be eligible for a $3,000 signing bonus.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure full communication access between Deaf and Hard of Hearing students and school personnel.
  • Serve as an integral member of the student's school-based team.
  • Participate in district-wide and department-specific professional development to enhance signing skills, educational interpreting, equity, educational access, and collaboration.
  • Participate in a network of interpreters for knowledge sharing, resource exchange, support, and partnership.
  • Participate in weekly mentoring with lead ASL Interpreters (for non-certified interpreters).
  • Receive coaching, feedback, and support from a supervisor fluent in ASL.
  • Benefit from on-site connect points and walk-throughs from a supervisor fluent in ASL.
  • Potentially work independently at a site, with a small group of interpreters, or as a float supporting district-wide needs.
