About The Position

The America Reads Tutor provides literacy support to students through one-on-one or small-group tutoring in reading, phonics, vocabulary, and comprehension. The tutor assists with literacy-related homework and leads engaging reading activities, games, and discussions. The role supports a positive learning environment and requires maintaining student-progress and tutoring-session records, communicating with the site supervisor, following host-site policies and confidentiality requirements, and completing required training. The position is part of the Work Study Program and offers experience in education, child development, and community service.

Requirements

• Be an undergraduate student awarded Federal Work-Study funds through FAFSA.
• Meet Dallas College Satisfactory Academic Progress standards.
• Be enrolled in at least 6 credit hours (half-time) during Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters.
• Be a U.S. citizen or eligible noncitizen.
• Have no outstanding institutional balances or registration blocks.
• Have reliable transportation to off-campus worksites, if applicable.
• Complete required Dallas College professional development training.
• Have strong reading, writing, and communication skills.
• Demonstrate patience, empathy, and a genuine interest in working with children and youth.
• Be able to work independently and as part of a team.
• Be able to pass background checks required by the host organization.

• Previous experience working with children or in an educational setting.

Responsibilities

• Provide one-on-one or small-group tutoring in reading, phonics, vocabulary, and comprehension.
• Assist students with homework assignments related to literacy.
• Engage students in reading activities, games, and discussions to make learning enjoyable.
• Support the classroom teacher or program staff in creating a positive learning environment.
• Maintain accurate records of student progress and tutoring sessions.
• Communicate regularly with the site supervisor regarding student needs and progress.
• Adhere to site-specific policies, procedures, and confidentiality guidelines.
• Participate in required training sessions related to literacy instruction and child development.
• Complete required Dallas College Professional Development training hours per academic year.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
